When I bought my 91 RS convertible the first thing I noticed is that the Factory stereo was trashed horrible. Static, bass slider doesnt have an effect , a few speakers not working etc . Its the factory original head unit and speakers. I am not much of an audiophile but you have to have :something: to listen to on those road trips etc.... So I figured I would just throw 2 pair of cheaper speakers at it and see if it revives it. For the fronts I bought these original footprint sized Pioneers p/n TS-G4644R 4" x 6" 2-way speaker . They were under $30 for the pair off Amazon. They fit pretty good but I think the drivers side one slightly hits the instrument cluster plastic with its magnet...BUT its not noticeable when you put the dash back on...... as far as sound quality they are really BRIGHT - almost too bright . Mid range is ok , high is exceptional even with the lame wattage , bass is almost non existent . Here are a few pics.

I also started on the rears with some round Jensens . They sound pretty good for a $30 set of speakers..decent bass , mid good , highs are a little subdued, volume is pretty good even with the factory head unit. Will put some pics of them up tomorrow .

So for 60 bucks I can live with the factory unit .....besides I only want to hear the engine for the most part LOL......

Side note : I also found this test printout from the assembly line laying on top of the ac vents under the dash pad ...looks like my vert was a mid year unit (june) see pic of printout . A31 L03 A90

Rear speakers....these Jensens JS65 fit nice ` $30 , the frames lined up with the factory mounting holes . They sound pretty good even though they are partially obstructed by the GM interior cutout they rest in . Bass ok, mid good , highs subdued . I mounted them behind the factory fabric grills as I wanted an original look and didnt want to cut any interior pieces up.

If you ever wondered what the Convertible rear side bolsters look like from behind here you go .....disassembly notes :

Factory speaker grills are held on "firmly" from behind the panel with 4 threaded studs and nuts which are part of the grill. They WILL NOT come off or pop off from the front...if you try to remove them from the front you will simply destroy them .

To remove the speakers the lower two mounting screws which are obscured by the armrest , the armrest has to come off , the armrest is held on by 2 threaded rods hanging out of its bottom and two nuts . Again it will NOT come off from the top - interior side .

The side bolsters come off by removing around 10 screws at various points ...pretty simple actually . I did NOT have to remove the seats to take the side bolsters out in this 91 Vert . One screw is kind of hidden in the moulded seatbelt cove near the floor .
