Re: no front speakers
I've read just as much saying an UNDERpowered amp is harder on speakers... Turn up the volume, run out of power and into clipping, and that is what likely blows speakers. Of course driving a 50w speaker with a 100w amp is bad too!

Re: no front speakers
Well, we have 3 things here. Speaker, a run of wire, and a head unit. Couple of tests will determine exactly where the fault is. You said the head unit recently replaced, so in theory it should be good, however if a speaker went bad, or worse, if the wire is shorting out somewhere, the front outputs of the head unit may also fail.
So, first I would check the outputs of the front channels. Disconnect all 4 channels of the stereo. Connect one front channel output to a known working rear speaker. Does it play? If yes, that channel is good, try the next one. If no, then you have a problem with the head unit.
Ok, so both front channels are tested and known to be good. Next, lets test the wire to the front speakers. Best way is to take a multimeter and test for continuity. Measure the resistance of each wire to find if there are any breaks. Test all 4 wires, both positive and negative for each speaker. If the wires are bad, run a new length of wire from which ever side is known to be bad.
So, the wires are ok and the head unit is ok. So that only leaves the speakers themselves. Try them outside the car on a different audio source, a home theater, boombox, anything that you can connect a speaker to. Just keep the volume very low and listen for sound. If it plays clear sound, it is most likely still good. If the speakers are bad, thats really tough to say how they went bad in such a short time.
