I got a Eclipse cd 8445, it has red green blue and i think orange, you can use one color or mix and match, i use blue and red, its about a $500-600 radio new, its MP3 and got a memory card slot that can record stuff on or play, but its discontd. u may be able to score one off ebay, i got mine out of a truck that someone traded in, i aslo have an Alpine CDA 9855, paid $500 for it 2 years ago, it has like over 400 colors (you scroll through them) its a MP3 head unit also, they are both good head units......or you can always get a newer PONTIAC radio most should bolt right in all you MAY need is a new plug or the one off the pontiac.
In my monte, i had the Sony CDFX5700 from a few years back. All the buttons glowed bright red, while the screen had 8 user selectable colors. I kept the red screen to match the red buttons. But that unit was complete ****, after like 6 months it started skipping over most bumps or if you shut the door, and the faceplate had problems like it would randomly flicker light blue, and sometimes the text would be messed up and have slashes and dollar signs and **** instead of letters, and the faceplate would just shut off but the music would stay on, and i had to tap on it a few times to get it to work. Sounded like absolute ****. I ran it through a 4channel amp which helped alot over the preamp.
My new clarion I bought for the firebird is awesome. No skipping, no "read error," and the overall sound quality is crystal clear and lifelike. It was a juggle for me between the clarion DXZ765MP and the Pioneer DEH-p5900IB and in the end I chose the clarion for its colors over the pioneer that had better tuning options. Now clarion lets you choose any color for the buttons by using a RGB scale, so I match the firebird guages almost exactly. The screen is a video LCD that is only greyscale.
