clicking noise from choke

Carb is from 1984 L-69. When I turn the key to the on position, the choke(I think its the choke anyway) starts making a real rapid clicking sound. Also, the choke does not seem to be "compressing" for lack of a better word, in preparation to start the engine. Has anyone ever had a problem like this before? Thanks in advance.

The clicking is actually the mixture control solenoid. If you don't start the engine after putting the switch to "on", it should stop clicking after about half a minute.

In order for the choke to close, the engine has to be cool, and the throttle opened slightly.

I had the same clicking question. Thanks for the post. I've still got one problem though. When I first start the car in the morning, the choke doesn't close. The car sputters and dies, and as it dies the choke closes. When I restart it, the choke opens again, and the engine usually hangs on, although it runs poorly until the temp gets up. What is the choke doing?

You kick the throttle before you try to start it? Sounds like the choke linkage or shaft is sticking and needs to be cleaned.

Yeah, I give the pedal a stab to the floor before I start it, but the choke doesn't close. But as the car sputters out and dies, it slowly closes just like it should. Then when I restart it, the darn thing opens right up again. So if it was sticking, it shouldn't open and close at all right?

It could do what your describing. You might free it up by hosing it down with spray carb cleaner, or you might have to rebuild.
