i think my carb is too big?

i have a stock 305 with an edelbrock carb, i checked the numbers and i think its a 650cfm performer, and it might have an older edelbrock intake manifold but im not sure. but anyway if u mash the gas it doesnt really do anything, it kinda spits and farts bogs a little around second, and it accelerates really slow, i know its not a 350 but still, shouldnt it do better than that?? is it becasue the carb is too big or is there another problem??

Is it an Edelbrock q-jet replacement (if there is one??) or is it a square bore four barrel performer series? Was the computer removed and the CC controlled distributor left in.Give us more info on the car and ALL mods done to it.What was removed..what is still intact? What are the numbers you found on the carb?Any numbers/names on the intake..do you know if it a single or dual plane?Even a 750 can be made to run pretty damn well on a 305 so I would say there is a bigger problem than it just being overcarbureted if its spitting and sputtering that bad.

all i know is that the number on the carb is 1406 1209, its a 4 barrel, the number on the intake manifold is GMCFM, and i also found 14057053. the carb was on the car when i bought it so i dont know anbout the computer, there is nothing in the compartment directly right from the fuses. the engine is completely stock as i know, i had the carb tested and it is set up perfect for the most performance and best vaccume, i also advanced the timing to 4 degrees over center, this seemed to help a little. that is all i know about it but i really need some help!! thanks alot

Ahhhhh, 1406 POS. If you have a non CC distributor then its a tunning issue. Move the pump shot down a hole first then turn the A/F mixture screws in all the way and back them both out 1 1/2 turns "standard edelbrock setting" if that doesent work get a spring kit and go to the yellow or plain springs, your getting too much fuel and the smaller spring will lean it out a bit.

Does your distibutor have a silver colored can on the passenger side of it with a vacuum hose connected to it?I am thinking whoever swapped carbs didn't put in a non CC ditsributor.Sounds like you are getting no timing advance making the car sluggish. The computer advances the timing in stock configuration but from the sounds of it the computer is gone leaving you with no advance. The intake I have no idea on what it is.IS there an adapter under the carb so that it can be mounted to the stock intake?Sounds like a mismatch of parts right now.If you have an older style vacuum advance HEI it more than likely just needs a little tuning to get her going good.Find out what distributor you have and possibly what intake first..that may be the answer to all you problems. Then we can better recoomend a fix to help you out.

there is a silverish can on the side of the distributor and there is an adaptor under the carb, a guy told me that it could be a transmission shifting problem, so he tried to adjust it and everything and it didnt help, so i got an edelbrock tv cable corrector and put it on, it helped a little but since the guy adjusted the linkage im thinkin it might be that its shifting too soon, im gunna have him adjust it again tuesday and see if that works.

Still may need to tune the mechanical advance curve along with accelerator pump shot to get it where the car needs it for best performance.Keep us informed of what happens tuesday!

it did help out ALOT, found out that it was shifting way too soon in 2nd and 3rd, so now when it hasnt warmed up completely it kicks a little when it shifts into second and u can gas it and no problem, and the 2nd gear kick goes away after it has had plenty of time to warm up
