how do you tune an edelbrock?

i am going to try to tune my edelbrock carb tomorrow and i have no clue how to do it. i dont have a manual or anything because it was on the car when i bought it but i just put in a new engine and its tuned for a 305 and i now have a 350. can somebody please give me directions on how to do it? i tried e-mailing edelbrocks customer help thing yesterday but they havent e-mailed me back. i tried a search but i didnt find much. my carb is a 600 cfm performer. i was also wondering if i should adjust my timing before or after i tune the carb? and what size air cleaner do i need? i have a 12 inch now i think and its too small and i cant put a taller air filter on it or my hood wont close.

you don't need an air/fuel guage,
you'll probably only have to adjust the idle and idle mixture screws, and the instructions are pretty clear.

It would make things go quicker if you had someone else there that has run an edlebrock carb. It shouldn't take long at all to get running.

If you have any problems shoot me a PM or email.I have a 750cfm
performer series #1411, I bought the rod,& jet & spring kit. it's a pretty simple carb to work on. I have a 14" K & N filter on mine but I also have a cowl hood and it only left about an inch clearance.

I just used a vacume gage to set the vacume at the highest posible vacume. I got 9''~10'' of vacume with a 274duration .50 lift cam.

Couldn't have really searched far cause me and others
have posted at lenght on the edelbrock.

The online manual at telesplanet is excellent.

You probably will only need to fine tune the primary side.
It's a little rich out of the box.

You can lean it out a bit for economy with a primary jet and metering rod change.

Set you ignition advance first.

Get an advance timing light. Set the timing at high rpm (3500+) to 32-36 deg. with no vac advance ( temperailrly)..
Be sure to rev the motor high enough to reach full mechanical advance while adjusting the timing.
now reconnect the vaccuum advance to ported vacuum. Timing at idle should be 10 to 14 deg @600 rpm.
Do not guess here. Set the timing.
The carb will not be that far off.

Get a hi per 14x 2.5" drop base air cleaner assembly.
the best one is this one from the 60's and 70's corvette and camaro. You can still buy it from restoration sources.
You'l need a 3/8" spacer ring (edelbrock) with this aircleaner base and the edelbrock carb.

The GM aircleaner base looks like this
The back needs to be trimmed a bit to clear a HEI distributor.
The 3/8" plastic spacer ring is in the edelbrock catalog.

This is how to get hood clearance with a 14x2.5" air filter
and high rise intake on a FBody.
There is even enough clearance for a nitrous plate.

Try this GM part #

6423907
HP 14" Air Cleaner
$96

Some one needs to do a sticky on this stuff.

Get a Road Demon, Brocks are rebuilt Quadro JUNK made even worse. But if you want to reset back to scratch. Close the pins all the way, and then back them both out 2 and one half turns and fine tune it from there.

Well I know what I has happened to me, LIke have owned 2 brand new 600 Brocks, and both of then didn't even last long. Did nothing but flood my 350 in my 83 monte carlo, didn't matter what i did to the carb rebuild, tune it, or reset it to factory settings, nothing. And i have owned this Road Demon for 2 years and I have only had to replace gaskets twice, and thats just standard maintance
