This time i made some changes to the carb. Before I was bogging off the line because the primaries werent delivering enough fuel. I was at the farthest i could go with the cheesey edelbrock tuning kit so what i did was i figured out the area of the rod power stage adn the jet and just found a jet with like 15% more area alone than the jet and rod combination i had now. I then just cut the tip off of a pair of rods and installed them
This worked great for getting fuel in there on the low end it didnt go extremely lean any more. The downside is that i think the rod gets stuck in the up position so sometimes ill be driving and it will go full rich, like 9:1 afr. I really need the carter tuning kit
I only got 1 run in before an 8 second 66 chevelle lost it and freakin disintegrated taking out 30 feet of guardrail with it. On this run i pretty much just made it right off the highway and forgot to lower the pressure in my drag radials, they were at 32 psi so there was much wheelspin and wheel hop.
the run probably ended around 4600 rpm which as you could guess is pretty terrible for performance being that i shift my car at nearly 6000 and peak power is like 5700. I have 3.42 gears. I really need 4.10s
Another thing youll notice is that it is pretty rich on the top end. I think richening up the primaries like i did made it apparent that the secondaries were compensatiing for lean primaries before. If i had another run i would have jetted down a size and seen 105+ mph
According to the common trap speed=hp formula used I am making nearly 350 hp at the flywheel. Thats maybe a little optimistic but i believe its atleast 330
1.1 hp per c.i. 305 n/a home ported factory heads, stock size valves, 214/224 flat tappet cam
who said Edelbrock carbs couldnt make power? Silly guys
You can't clip the rods and them work right. Modifying them (grinding, thinning, reshaping) is just fine and you are sharp for doing so. You just have to leave a very smooth polished surface on the rod and it must be roughly the same length as the original rod so it will not hang up and stick against the jet.
Just thin down a rod tip and spend some time polishing it up and you'll have no problems.
Edelbrock/Carter make a lot of jet/rod combos but not all. It's much cheaper to modify your own.
Thanks for the compliment btw arent you the guy with the website with all the edelbrock carb mod pics?
If it is you I enjoyed your webpage even though all the pics are mixed up now You are the only other edelbrock/carter guy ive found into racing mods and such
It seems like they dont sell the carter strip kit anymore I looked in the summit page and jegs and its not there so i guess i am stuck sanding down the tips and mic'ing them huh
Yep that be me.
Yep micing. As long as the engine is happy it doesn't matter how you do it. I always found that sbc's like the driverside of the carb to be a little richer if you run a dual plane intake. The driverside plenum is much bigger and #4 and #6 cylinder runners are very short.
I haven't had time to fix the pics and I was thinking about starting over anyway.

Not the only one who found that out. 2% richer on the DS or 2% leaner on the PS.
Pablo, Its not everyone doesent want to try an edelbrock, its just soo much easyer with a holley. I personally mess with all of them attempting peak performance.

That sounds about right. I run mine on the ragged edge of lean so I go between 3 and 5% to cover it.
Better yet if you want to start any kind of discussion on the carter style carb then just make a new thread and that way everybody can share/contribute.
