I am going to rebuild the quadrajet on my Iroc and I know I'm going to have to seal the well plugs in the bottom of the float bowl. I've seen everything mentioned from nail polish to gas tank repair. What's been used with the best success? I had always used jb weld but that's been many years ago. Just don't want to have to deal with this problem again.

In the RARE event of an actual leak from the well plugs, I've used 2-part epoxy, myself.

It's real rare, though, on most modern QJets. To check- while you've got the carb in pieces fill up the main casting (fuel bowl casting) with gas to about 1/2" from the rim and let it sit on a paper towel for 20 minutes. If the paper towel is wet under the well plugs, you got a leaker. If not, they're not leaking.

You can tell mine leaks down after the car sets for a while. It will leak all the fuel out of the bowl and it takes several turns of the starter for the pump to fill the bowl back up before it will fire. You also get the rich smell when it first fires up after setting for just a half hour or so.

Does it indicate that I have leaking well plugs, if after I remove my carb there is gas on top of the intake manifold area where the carb mounts? Like the ridge that runs between the left and right sides of the opening?

My car has no low-end power but really pulls in the high RPMs, could this be the cause?

The 2 part epoxy is a great idea. You could drill out the plugs then thread the holes to accept short set screws dipped in the epoxy then installed and more epoxy spead on top of the screws. I've done that plenty of times and have had no leaks.
