Another Carb Swap, HELP with Fuel Pump!!
Ok, my buddy's switching to a Carb, he does not want to go with the Mallory 3port deal. What other options are there for a fuel pump, he kind of wants an electric external pump but i'm not sure how to hook it up, use the stock fuel lines?? They seems kinda small to me. Plus he's gonna add Nitrous down the road and the fuel supply to the motor would scare me a bit.. Any other suggetions guyz?? Ideally i'd like an external pump (inline?) and new braided fuel line ran upto the motor, but i can't figure out how to connect it to the tank without welding on a sump..
I did it different on my motor, i bougth a new tank, welded on a sump and i'm running a holley blue pump, however he wants to run his flowmaster catback and the sump sits right where the muffler does so that eliminates that deal..

I read in the tech articles about anther way, the way that requires you to remove the gas tank. He talked about running an electric pump, carter, holley, etc.. But how would you connect the lines to the tank, just drill into and and put an adapeter? suggestions?

with all the extra work involved in saving 79 dollars for the regualtor will cost you more in the long run..
the stock 3/8 feed is enough for 500 ponies....there are guys on this board with almost that amount of power with stock lines...
either
A). use the stock or upgrade stock type pump with the mallory 3 port
B). sump the tank and use what ever you want...

Why not just take out the factory pump in the tank, mod the pickup (insert piece of line where the fuel pump was), and install an inline electric? You can get them the put out the right pressure for a carb. Then you wont have the regulator issue. Or you could just use the regulator. If you are going to run a carb though, why not just use a mechanical pump? Lot simpler, Lot cheaper, makes sense.

cant you just pull the old feul pump fuze.. then put an inline electric carb feul pump up on the fire wall or something like that and have it pull the feul through the old pump..... im pretty sure this would work

I dont have any pictures, But I have done it many times, on lots of vehicles, not just thirdgens. Its pretty basic. Take out the pump, modify the pickup, Find a good spot by the fuel lines to mount the pump (most people just outside the tank, on the flat spot), and splice it in. Oh yeah, you will need to hook up power, either by splicing into the factory, or running your own. Not very hard, and there are a few threads here with very detailed instructions.

I wish I had the option to run a mechanical pump on mine. If so I would have one already. Damn my caprice 350ci and its no hole for the fuel pump rod

Hold on- no fuel pump pushrod hole?? Really?? I haven't run into any 80s era SBCs that didn't have a fuel pump pushrod hole. Sure, the block off plate on the outside of the engine must be swapped for one off an earlier carbureted setup that has a hole in it and a fuel pump pushrod must be procured, but the blocks I've used have ALL been drilled for a fuel pump pushrod and the cams have likewise had a fuel pump eccentric on them (even if the cam was originally used in a FI application).

I believe he's speaking of the SDPC Caprice crate engine. The boss is cast, but the holes aren't machined. Same for LT1's, from what I've gathered.

Hes right I have the caprice crate engine. It looks like I could mount one...but there is no hole.
I couldn't run one with my lt4 cam anyways...no fuel pump lobe.
