I'm thick-headed and, as a consequence, I'm unsure of what #3 means:

1. Prepare vehicle for adjustments -- See emission label.

2. Turn idle speed screw to set curb idle -- A/C off.

3. Solenoid energized -- A/C compressor lead disconnected at A/C compressor, A/C on, M/T in neutral.

4. Open throttle slightly to allow solenoid plunger to fully extend.

5. Turn solenoid screw to adjust to specified RPM (reconnect A/C compressor lead after adjustment).

There's a little solenoid on the driver's side of the carb that bumps the throttle arm open a smidge when you turn the A/C on to help compensate for the extra load put on the engine when the compressor is running.

They're telling you to turn on the A/C (to engergize the solenoid) but keep the compressor disengaged by unplugging it (2 wire connector just behind the clutch/pulley on the unit, up top). And then you set the idle speed to a certain spec by turning the plunger sticking out of the solenoid. It's got a hex-head on the end of it you can turn with a wrench to adjust it. It's not strong enough to pop the throttle open on it's own, but if you blip the throttle a little it will extend and then stay extended until you turn the A/C off again.

End of the day..... way too much trouble. Get the engine warmed up fully, turn on the A/C and then adjust the solenoid to get whatever idle speed you feel is comfortable for you with the A/C running. Chances are that you'll want the idle speed to be about 100-200 RPMs higher with the A/C on than with it turned off.

It's a setting you can "play around with" until it seems comfortable to you.

Hey, Damon, many thanks. If at start-up, the car idles at curb speed for a few moments before climbing, should I suspect the choke pull-off?
