Home-Made Dual Snorkel - $10 and a few hours work
TGO Guys,
I've been searching every J.yard looking for a Dual Snorkel for my son's car without any luck. Those listed for sale are always way out of what I consider a reasonable price range. Decided to make my own..... I didn't care too much for other plans I had seen so I started from scratch. After looking at EVERY GM car in the J.Yard I found a couple pieces (Delta 88 ductwork) that I thought might just work out. The duct has a similar "look" of the stock scoop we have on the DR's Side and it turns the proper direction. I purchased several pieces of plastic duct from a variety of vehicles and also grabbed a cleaner base. Total cost about $10 and about three(3) hours of cutting, welding, and painting. What do you think?
Sincerely,
Kurt

Easier than I thought..
TGO Guys,
This was easier than I thought it would be. If I ever do come across a J.Yard "Stock" Pass Side Scoop. It'll look 100%. I'm sure this will help the engine breathe better.
Thanks guys,
Kurt

TGO Guys.....
Thanks.
I'll probably take the time to write down some very specific instructions w/photos in MSWord in the event that anyone wants to follow along. Fortunately, I didn't make any wrong turns aside from having the MIG welder voltage and line speed a little too high at the first tack. Lucky it was only a minor inconvenience to rectify.
If anyone is interested... PM me and I'll try to send a MSWord file as soon as time permits.
Sincerely,
Kurt
EDIT: Bad spelling.
Thanks.

With access to a welder anyone could do this in a couple hours;
Requirements:
About three hours (start to finish)
Tape Measure
Permanent Marker
Drill (Pilot Holes for Jig Saw)
Jig-Saw (w/Metal Cutting Blade)
Hacksaw
Brass Hammer
Power Sander (just about anything would do)
Couple Vise-Grip Clamps
Welder (Any little outfit will do - I have access to a Miller Mig)
Paint
It really was very very easy & cheap!.
Sincerely,
Kurt

Looks very well done. Was it hard to cut the hole in the cleaner with a jigsaw?

No not really... I have an old battery powered Makita and it was a little less powerful than a plug-in model. But it could be done with a plug in model, if one could control the speed down a little. I definatley would not use Tin-Snips as I think that would bend the thing up.

It's a little trickey getting around that coolant bottle isn't it? I'm using the HUGE coolant bottle on my son's Z-28. It's "Hot-Lanta" figured that might be a good move but it's tight on the duct work.
Little tight on the Rad. Cap also but we can get it off.

Yeah Kurt, it was a little tricky around the coolant bottle. I went to a u-pull-it JY and got all kinds of plastic ductwork out of various chevy's. What I finally ended using was a piece from an 80's cadillac that is like a long tube with a 90 degree that I cut to fit in the space.
And yes the Eagles will kill Dallas !!

Very good job on the air cleaner! Somehow I doubt the borrowed wire welder I use would do such a clean job.
I've been thinking about modifying the base on the '57 to eliminate the drop. As it is now, I have to put an airhorn spacer on it to move the lid away from the airhorn! Might as well eliminate an inch of the drop instead.
I finally got the "5.7 HO" decal for the Camaro's dual snorkel. Now need to find the time to sandblast and repaint.

As far as the borrowed wire welder is concerned. I'm no welder but I have done some VERY pretty & strong welds with my neighbor's little Lincoln Portable. It uses the Flux Core wire. However, it doesn't work for beans if there is even the slightest amount of rust, dirt, crud, oil ANYTHING foreign that can upset the arc and you get CRAP welds that look more like POO with splatter everywhere! If the materials are bead blasted or VERY clean....NO PROBLEM. The air cleaner was done with a 75/25 Argon Sheilded Miller MIG.

Looks great man. Excellent job.
The only thing I would critique about the peice is the metal part of the snorkel is still the skinny tubed peice that came on the non-HO air cleaners. The HO air cleaners had much larger, shorter tubing that supposedly flows better than the non-HO ones. Even so, I highly doubt it would make that much difference in performance compared to how much more work would be involved in doing something like that. So that critique is pretty much moot anyway.
Like I said, great job. Want to make me one?

I really wanted to make an assembly that more closely resembled the H.O. style which wouldn't have been too much more difficult. The real difficulty was finding ductwork that was in decent shape and would fit the application. I couldn't find anything.
There has been a decent performance upgrade from this modification. With the single snorkel the lack of air was actually "CHOKING" the carb just as if the Choke Plate was closed. The stove pipe was functional. When the car was cold the lack of air caused the car to flood and and stall before the Thermac closed the stove port. Now both stoves are functional and the problem is gone. My son and I have also noticed a driving improvement.
Sincerely,
Kurt

You guys and montecarloss.com gave me the insight to do this on my own. This took very little time to fab together. The longest part was finding another single snorkel to cut off to put on my original. Once I had all the parts. Cutting, sanding and painting took very little time.
Just used a sander/polisher with a metal cutting disk. 5 rivets. 1200 degree Flat Black pant and presto! $5 for single snorkel, $8 for paint. Had all other tools. So much for paying the inflated prices for the original Duals for which I came close to buying one! Thanks very much guys!!
I took my 1987 Monte Carlo Aerocoupe to a car show soon after putting it back together. Every one that looked in my engine bay said "Aerocoupe's" came with a Dual Snorkel???? lmfao.
It sure does look original though! Now I just need the 305cid High Output stick would look very nice!

I bought an 84 Z/28 a few month ago. It needs a lot of TLC. I have seen alot of useful information in all the fourms. Like everyone else, I'm looking to save a buck. I need an air cleaner, so this is great for me. Thanks

Now we just need one that works on TBI with serpentine drive. Off topic but has anyone attempted to run some kind of ductwork to the firewall and draw through that screen at th base of the windshield?

Doesn't matter. It's a slight variation and all new variations are good!!!!! I'm working on the Ram Air version of this for Ram Air hoods. Almost there but the damn weather down here right now isn't let me do anything!!!!

they don't have the TBI models or serpentine setup. I'm in the process of doing mine. You need to move the A.I.R. stuff to let it fit. i also moved my heater hoses and heat control valve to the frame rail. i'm also pretty sure i will need a different coolant overflow the the hoses will fit.

Is there a noticeable improvement over a open air element? What is the point of something like this?
