carb and psi

I have been fighting with my car for awhile. I had a bad fuel smell and was having some probs with surging. I had the regulator set at 6 psi and today I just moved it down to 3 psi. the car does not buck wile you are just cruising and I don't smell the fuel. edelbreock 1406 carb mallory unilite dist. msd. comp cam.

now here is my question. what would happen if you had too low a psi. would it just not run? what would cause the car to be hard to start after you have been driving for about 4 or 5 min. I mean I had to hold my foot on the pedel about half way down. then it started. I just don't wannt to run too rich or too lean.

Pressure doesn't mean much on a carbureted setup, as long as it's not too high. Flow is much more important.

Playing with the fuel pressure won't do much for richness or leanness as long as the floats are set up right. Set it at around 5-6 psi and leave it alone.

so set it to 5 or 6 and leave that alone. are there any tips you can give me on getting it to run a little better when it is at 6? I have not setup a carb before. I honestly have not set a float. I am mechanical, but I have not done it. is it fairly simple or am I going to be finding myself buying a new carb?

thanks

Do you have the manual for the carb? It has everything you need to get started in it.
