Interest in pictoral guide to rebuiding/adjusting CC-Qjet?
I had an idea that might be something worth having on the board for all to reference, but I'd need some help to do it.....
I could do a step-by-step assembly/adjustment of a CC-QJet with pictures and written explanation that could be posted either as a sticky here or maybe as a separate tech article. Not sure if this has ever been done before anywhere else but if it hasn't I'd be willing to do it.
The help I would need would be primarily with the pictures (and integrating them with the text- maybe spitting the whole thing out as a PDF in the end). Somebody with a good digital camera (that can take close-ups) and knowlege of how to edit the photos, put in arrows and text to point things out in the photos, etc. And since there would probably be DOZENS of pictures involved this would be no small task. Somebody who would be willing to spend the time doing multiple editing itterations through it with me, etc. The actual picture-taking would only be one day at my house but the editing to get it to tell the right story would probably take some time.
In short, this sucker would be a MONSTER with both photos and text if I'm really going to convey all the little details that an inexperienced rebuilder would need to get good results trying it themselves the first time. Main thing is, I want to do this RIGHT, if I'm going to do it.
Anyone willing to help? I would think you'd have to live near me (Philly/Wilmington area) if this is going to work.
__________________ 90 Chevy 454SS truck. Out with the wheezing TBI dumptruck engine, in with a nasty little AFR-headed solid cammed 454 taken "back to basics" with big Holley 4bbl, single plane intake, big headers, loud exhaust, and nothing remotely close to emissions compliance or good fuel economy. Loud, dangerous, anti-social and lots of fun.
78 Malibu. Inherited from my Grandomther with only 35K on the odo! 13.4 @ 107 with mild N/A 383. With Weiand 142 blower installed....... not quite so mild. Orignially shooting for 11.99 on street tires, but mid 12s appears to be the best it's gonna do- nowhere near enough traction.
A carb to rebuild is not an issue- I have a shelf full of them I can use for this. A carb with a cracked baseplate doesn't matter if you're only using it to take pictures of.
Thanks for the offer on the editing. I might take you up on that. I really need someone with a good digital camera for close-ups. Mine MIGHT work, but it's really more of a cam-corder that just happens to take still shots. Specialized capabilities are not it's strong suit.
I've got a digital SLR, but CCC carbs don't exist up here.
Sure they do, just gotta look at the later 4bbl cars and HO cars. My L69 had a CC Qjet. If anyone wants pics, I have a pretty good digicam and can get pics for you.
Go figure, three canucks answer the call to help on a part that exists primarily in USA.
haha, alright, lets see if adam can gets some pics of his then..
This would be all-new pics with "action shots" of how to actually put it together especially in tricky areas like putting the airhorn back on and lining up the TPS pushrod correctly so you don't bind it, etc, etc. Plus pics of everything in the carb and where it goes for guys who have gotten in over the heads and basically have a "bucket of unidentified parts" to start from.
I'm trying to create something really useful that could be referenced a zillion times over for the myriad of questions that pop up on this board about rebuilding/adjusting CC-QJets.
I've never seen anything like this on the internet so I thought it would be a cool project. Even Doug Roe's book doesn't REALLY tell you how to do this- information is scattered in a million different places. It's actually not that hard to do, but it's tough to find everything you need to know in one place.
oh, one though - sometimes it's hard to tell which spring goes where. Maybe line up all the "springs" from the carb, put them on a white sheet of paper, with a quarter next to it. mspaint can put arrows showing which is which, and where it goes.
I wish you would have brought this to our attention earlier. A few months ago I bought a CCC Quadrajet that I disassembled and cleaned in order to put it on my car, but I have yet to put it back together. I also have a decent digital camera that has a nice macro feature for clear, close-up shots.
I ran into a snag with the rebuild, being that I couldn't find a gasket for the seat, and I haven't touched the carb since. It's still sitting in my room waiting to be put back together.
I'd love to help you with this project, as it is something I would have love to see when I first joined this site. It seems there has been a servere lack of tech articles based on the particularities of third gens, especially the low-performance engine (read: LG4) models which are generally just swapped out with bigger ones instead of fine-tuned like they could be. These cars have so much potential but no one seems to want to take the time to figure it out.
Although this site is probably the most vast source of information on these cars, a lot of good information is lost among the thousands of posts that the sites recieves on a daily basis, and it's not always easy to find said information once it's buried deep beneath all of the other stuff.
A third-gen specific Quadrajet rebuild guide would be a great addition to the seemingly limitless information already contain here. It should help newbies out by giving step-by-step instructions on how to disassemble, clean, reassemble and fine tune their CC Quadrajets for maximum performance/economy/emission legality. It should also be easy to understand and not unnecessarily complicated. It should also be a good source for more experienced gearheads to pinpoint potential problems with their CC Quadrajets. Most importantly, it should be a collective work of reliable information... anyone should be able to look up information relative to the subject of rebuilding and tuning a CC Quadrajet and find it all in one organized collection, not have to search for hours on end to the answer to one particular question.
Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox and stop rambling now. I just want to let you guys know I support this idea 100% and I will contribute in whatever way I can. I'm all for helping fellow third-gen'ers realize the potential of their cars.
I guess I'll take my own pictures and have a whack at it with MS Paint. All I need are some colored arrows and such to point things out. I think I can do it. I have stacks of old cc-QJets laying around that I could do this on so that's not the problem- I just don't trust my digital camera with close-ups and blurry pictures aren't going to do anyone any good. Having someone else take the pitures while I hold stuff in position, partially assembled or while actively being assembled was the other reason I was hoping to get help with the photography- the wife is not the greatest at doing stuff like this.
Damon I might be able to help you take pics. I have a nice cannon digital that I got this year. I know nothing about editing but it takes good pics. I'm tied up this weekend but mayby we could do it before the end of the month.
