need some 305 h.o. wisdom
well i finaly bought an other 3rd gen, 1985 black on red t-top 5 speed 305 h.o. and well i figure theres not much point dropping much $$$ on this motor since any new modern muscle can totaly burn me, so i figured i wanna only spruce up my 305, i may go with the same exhaust setup i had on my tbi wich by the way i think i never got more compliments on any car i have ever owned, my setup was hedman standard lenght w/ 2.5" y-pipe no cat and 3" flowmaster 80 series, not to brag but i really had a nice souding tbi really worth the cash, so i may just go the same route for my new t/a but as for the engine i'm still debating where to invest the little cash i wanna spend on the motor, i figure the carb is fine, heads are 416 w/ a good p&p, intake is fine w/ a good port, i guess if i just get a nice mild cam, new exhaust i should be fine, but since u guys have 305 h.o. i wanna know where u spent ur money and got good power for not much, and also i have a borg diff w/ rear discs so i wanna if i have 3.23 or 3.08 gears, let me know thx

Hi,
If, in fact, your car really is an HO car(L69 engine, eighth digit of the VIN is code G), only a handful were produced in 1985. So congratulations on such a good find, especially if it's in good condition, which it sounds like it might be. There's prolly a few people on here who'd restore or keep it as stock as possible.
Regarding the 416 heads, a lot of people do keep them and port them because they're supposed to be good ones.
As for your differential, the Borg Warner 9-bolt disc rearend attached to the L69/5-speed in 1985 and 1986 had a 3.70 axle ratio. So most likely, that's what you have. There should be(or should've been) a tag on the cover stating its part number and its ratio.
Good luck with your new car... and have fun!

Check the FAQ forum for a 305 thread that talks about differences and performance improvements.
Since you're starting out with the L69, a Comp XE268 cam and a good set of headers along with what has already been stated will make a big difference.
