Try summit. There are kits you can buy with a bunch of different rods and hangers in them. You can also hit the junkyards and check in the older boats.

I have a couple numbers.
.035" = #1936
.037" = #1937
.039" = #1939
.041" = #1942
.043" = #1944

Re: q jet tuning metering rods and hanger
Yea, those are your secondary rods, CK and CE. I'd double check edelbrocks webpage to make sure those part numbers are definately for their q-jet ones and not their thunder series or whatever. (I'm 90% sure they're for q-jets, but i'd want to be 100%).
Are CK and CE what you want to try? What do you have now? Have you checked the list that Damon put into the tech articles section? What hangers do you have?
I think the JY is the best source. 5 finger discount and you can get a schwack of them in 24hrs.

Re: q jet tuning metering rods and hanger
I just go to truck u pull it yards and snag a handful, they usually come with the good skinny tipped rods like DR, DP, etc. Keep in mind just throwing really rich secondary rods on a stock 305 is not going to do much, if anything. Might even make it worse.

Re: q jet tuning metering rods and hanger
If your 305 is totally stock, the factory rods are fine. It's only when you start stepping up to bigger cam, better gears, etc that it's really going to matter. Throwing more gas at an engine with a 0.350" lift cam isn't going to do much except make your gas mileage worse when you step on it.

damn really? hmm
cuz thats y i didnt switch to a bigger carb but i thought this would be a better alterative...once i get the air assembly and the headers will it be worth it to tweak the carb

Re: q jet tuning metering rods and hanger
yea, they aren't pricey, but the selection is crappy. CK and CE is all there is right?
DR's were factory on L69 motors, which makes them pretty good. AX I think was factory on 455 motors in the late '60's. DD's were on LAME truck motors. Those are like fingers, they don't get rich at all!
A stock 305 will run well with stock rods. The CK's on there now are fine, or DR's for a bit more fuel.
Here's a chart
https://www.thirdgen.org/rods
that shows the diameter at different heights, height being the air valve angle in degrees to be correct. Your hanger will pull the rod out further if it's closer to A. Z would be the leanest sorta thing. B-K is a good place to be.
Yes, with headers you can go up to the DR's or so, and the air cleaner upgrade.

Re: q jet tuning metering rods and hanger
One of the big problems with your engine is the cam. It is sooooo bad, it's barely opening the valves at 0.350" lift on the intake side. If you plan on keeping the 305, get a bigger cam. Bolt ons can only do so much with that tiny cam.

Re: q jet tuning metering rods and hanger
52k miles is barely broken in.
I'd look at a compxe268. Nice thing is you can carry it over to your 350 later (which WILL happen), and it'd suit that just fine.

Re: q jet tuning metering rods and hanger
Not really, do a compression test, if you still are getting good compression on all cylinders, throwing a mild performance cam in isn't going to hurt anything.
One thing you should do is a valve job, if those heads are original and have never been off. The exhaust valves will be really pitted at this point, I have taken lots of 80s SBC heads apart, and anything with over 75k miles needed a valve job (would have still run, but the valves were pitting very noticeably)

Re: q jet tuning metering rods and hanger
o cool thanx for the info....see i eventually wanna just swap the engine completeley so depending on how much time and money this is gonna cost me will decide if i do the cam or not....
ok so for now the metering rods are out of the question but it would still be worth it to loosen my secxondary air valve right?

Re: q jet tuning metering rods and hanger
Again, maybe maybe not. Making the air valve too loose is just going to bog and slow you down a lot. If your engine is totally stock and your carb is jetted for that engine, its pretty much the way it's gonna need to be. Maybe the factory AV setting is a little too tight, but depending on your gears, you don't want to go too far.
