Holley street avenger Vs......?

Looking at digging the car out of the snowbank within the next few days and im going to get back to work on it ASAP!

As it sits i have no carb!

Last carb was an edelbrock performer 600cfm, not too entirely impressed with it but it served its purpose.

Now im looking at picking up a 770cfm street avenger to replace it.

Anyone having any major issues with this thing?

Anything 'better' to go with in the same price range?

Re: Holley street avenger Vs......?

I'd say stick a good ole regular 650 double pumper on instead of one of those junky carbs. Seems like only a hand full of people have ever been happy with them and I wasn't one of them. I ran a 670 S/A and never had it run right. Stuck a 750 double pumper on and it made a huge difference in how the car drove, it was much better, and that was on my old 305.

Only thing is, a double pumper isnt the best choice for one of these tanks especially with an auto according to holley...

Then to top it off, all of the double pumpers are manual choke. I would rather not have a manual choke...!

Holley is extremely conservative in their carb recommendations.

Check the manual secondaries section of their website. It has a chart that shows minimum WOT RPM for a given engine CID and carb size. You can trust it (it isn't as conservative because it's not a Holley chart ).

If you want electric choke, put on an electric choke conversion kit.

Street Avengers are a poor excuse for a performance carb. Avoid them. Too expensive for what you get. Vacuum secondaries are good for tow trucks and deliberately over-carbureted engines. Unless you fit into one of those categories, either stick with a q-jet or get a double pumper.

People also said a 750 wouldn't run on a 305 worth a crap and guess what, it ran just fine on mine. Also, there are electric choke kits for the carbs. The Street Avenger carbs are a waste of money but I'm betting you'll get one anyway.

Re: Holley street avenger Vs......?

The 750 would run on a 305, just a bit overkill for it and jetted a bit fat...

Ill look into getting a double pumper and the choke conversion kit.

If thats getting too crazy on the price i may just slap an edelbrock back on there. At least i know they work, just not 100% !!!

edit: Ok looked into it, i dont know... the street avenger and edelbrock are in the $450-650 range and the double pumper is $900 plus the choke kit!

Now looking at the demon carbs, road demon #4402020VE 725cfm is about $560. about in the middle of an edelbrock and a street avenger...

I dont know, maybe ill just go back to an edeljunk, at least that way it cant be any worse than before

I know you're dealing with Canadian $'s, but where are you getting those prices? A 650-750 double pumper with choke kit would be less than $500 US from Summit.

Re: Holley street avenger Vs......?

The same carb on summit is $500us + the goodies and choke kit

Yes i was talking canaduck bucks and the prices are what i would pay if i walked down to crappytire and ordered one up right now. The prices are the list price from ekeystone (i still have access to crappy tires online pricing there)

Some of their prices are off the wall but generally not too much higher than i would pay if i was to get my buddy to order them up through his work and get his discount.

I would love to order this all up from jegs or summit but by the time the dust settles i only save $50 on a $2000 order

I also have the option of picking up a little 142 blower from my buddy for cheap... maybe ill do that just to add to my headaches

Re: Holley street avenger Vs......?

Well, ordered up a 700cfm double pumper today, along with a lil 110gph mechanical pump so i can retire the antique thats on there!

Dont care about the manual choke now, just bought a truck for a daily driver and for the once a week i will be taking the car out i can handle sticking around it for a few minutes till it warms up.

Now onto the next project, pulling the tranny out to swap it over!

Re: Holley street avenger Vs......?

Well, i dug out the car last night...

Bolted on the new 700cfm double pumper and a 110gph holley pump. after almost ending up with a little gasoline fire situation, i fixed the hose and all was well!

I dont have insurance on it yet so i could only take it for a boot around the parking lot, i dont know if its just because i havent drove it in 8 months or what, but it seems like it has ALOT more kick to it now!!!

Very glad i did go with this carb, the power seems like a night and day difference over the old edelbrock one i had on there

Re: Holley street avenger Vs......?

Haha, almost had a bonfire last night though!

Went out to fire it up and she blew a lovely fire out the carb

Good thing the hood was open... Just walked up there and blew it out lol

Now i just have to get that carb dialed in 100%

Right now the pump shot is a bit much. Almost/does stall when you hammer on it, then jumps back to life busting the back tires loose and the thing is all over the road
