am using a K&N; they claim extra hp benefits. personally don't really run fast enough on the way to work and back to care about extra breathing, but sure is nice being able to clean, reuse.
AMSOIL used to make them, but they've gone to a different, non-oiled type due to MAF problems that can occur with oiled filters.
I believe Accel makes an oiled foam filter (although I can't find it on Summit now). You don't want to use a non-oiled type.
K&N's flow well, but they let a lot more dirt through them than a standard paper filter. They're basically an expensive way to wear out your engine more quickly.

Precisely - they flow more, because the holes are bigger.
Paper filters are still best IMO - carb or EFI - they are dirt cheap and they don't cause any problems like the oiled filters can (they can gum up MAF sensors and if it gets bad enough, sometimes even passages in the throttle body of a carb).
Paper has been one-upped by the AMSOIL Ea filters. Since the fibers are finer, you can have small holes to stop the dirt, but more of them to allow more air in.
Oiled foam is fine if you don't have MAF. It works on a different principle, but a good one.
I searched on K&N & saw what you are saying. crud. it's probably getting to my car. good thing I don't live in a place known for dust like Vegas (have you seen the billboards there that say "don't drive through dirt & kick up dust"?).
Five7, are you referring to a particular foam filter produced by K&N letting in alot of dirt or their filters in general? I've been using a K&N 3" element for 3 years. Yikes! Jon
I'm using the K&N oil spray filter... so say some 5 micron pieces of grit get sucked passed the air filter, mixed with fuel, sucked or squirted into 8 chambers, compressed, tossed around during a contained explosion, then that grit either ends up getting sucked out w/ exhaust fumes or gets stuck to our engine oil. guess it take about maybe 10 or 15 minutes for 100% of engine oil pass to through the oil filter? from reading the results of the K&N test data, having 5 micron grit in our cars is a likely case. How much damage is going to occur to our engines?
I had the same problem on my Toyota Celica, the oil from the filter clogged the sensor and it ran like hell. And on my old Jeep, you should have seen the dirt on the throttle body from oil build up and me driving off road.
dont buy the edelbrock foam ???-flo. 1 backfire and its melted
The local sherriff's dept had to put mine out! Man was I pissed. And no Edelbrock wouldn't pay for a new Holley carb or even buy me a rebuild kit for that matter. Never again will I use that pos Edelbrock pro **** air cleaner. It's suicide!
