ok to start there are alot of problems with motor first off i think the timing is off plus there is a massive vacuum leak but i still drive it everyday! ok its a 1984 carb v6 i checked every vacuum line no leak, and for timing i dont even know what to time it to! i think its a 20 degrees btdc but not sure the carb is from a junkyard so im sure that doesnt help but i know nothing about carbs
PLEASE HELP ME!!!
I have a manual for 82-86 camaros at home. I'll try to remember to look up your timing and let you know tonight. 20 btdc sounds a little high to me but I don't know squat about V6s.
Have you checked your manifold bolts? Sometimes they get loose and cause a vacuum leak. Shoot some carb or brake cleaner into different places that you think are leaking. If it's sucking vacuum the car will idle way up or idle way down when that stuff hits it.
As for your poor mileage... I dunno. Hopefully someone else will. Sorry man!

if you have a stock replacement carb then autozone.com repair info says your 6-cyl timing should be set to "10 degrees".
can you post a picture of your carb or read off the manufacturer stamps on it?
Sorry about this post I Don't own a camero. But I Own a 84 GMC S15 with a 2.8l Carb. and it's gettng 9 mpg and fueleconomy.gov saying it should get 15 to 22. I Get 9 mpg city and 15 highway I'm just hoping to get better milage too. thanks
its sad to think were getting the same mileage of a V8! but i timed to 10 degrees and it was way off so maybe i was doing somthing wrong but it didnt even run
I am going to assume that it is a computer controlled carb. If that is the case I would check all your sensor, starting with your Oxygen sensor. If you have Maf, map, or tps sensors I would check all those as well, but as I stated before I'm not sure what sensors it would have. Also, is you're car running rich, your carb may not be adjusted properly and your carb is drinking too much gas. Another thing to check would be plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil change, air filter and maybe your fuel filter too. Its hard for me to say without being there and looking I'll try to help you though. I will check in from time to time.

My 350 gets about 18mpg
I had a v6 and I believe the timing is supposed to be set to about 10*. If your car still has the emissions sticker under the hood, it will tell you the appropriate timing.
thanks for all the help but its not a computer controlled carb as for running rich i have no idea how to tell but i do have a adjustable fuel regulator witch is set at .5 psi it used to be set at 5psi(the regulator is on there because it used to be tbi but the computer fried) but i didnt notice anything when i changed it. i have new cap, rotor, wires, spark plugs, air filter, and a new fuel filter it does need a oil change though. im lost so i was just thinking about getting a conversion kit to make it a v8 might be better to do that but thanks again!
[quote=sheppyfire87;3656282](the regulator is on there because it used to be tbi but the computer fried) 84 v6 did not come with a TBI. Are you sure you don't have a computer controlled carb, if you do and comp is fried...you are running in "limp" mode and have no timing advance or mixture control.
sorry for the delay i was in nj for for work but its a 86 s10 truck that had tbi but the converted it to carb i cant find the vacuum leak i checked every line and checked the bolts on on the manifold still nothing so im just gonna make it a 350 got the motor just looking for the conversion kits thanks guys,
SHEP
Anyway if the car..er truck was originally TBI and someone threw a carb on it, and trashed the computer, did they change the distributor? If not then you still have no timing advance.
TBI and CCC vehicles have their timing advance controlled electronically by the computer. If you eliminate the vehicles computer controls then you must run a different distributor (usually with a vacuum advance setup) or your timing will no longer advance as you increase throttle and will remain fixed at base timing. Which means bye bye power, and mileage as well as probably premature wear on spark plugs and valves.
