I bought this carb when I first started getting engine ready to be put into my 91 RS. Guy said it was just rebuilt and it looked brand new. When put on and tried starting car it wouldnt adjust when turned screws in and it backfired a few times and had a little fire in carb. So I rebuilt it and when started spraying carb cleaner on and in it all the paint started comming off. got it back together and in the kit and looking at the sheet it didnt have the pump checkball weight or the pump discharge nozzle checkball under the needle valve that it shows. so of corse I didnt put them into the carb and wonder if thats part of the problem or is the carb just junk and need to find replacement? ANY help Please IM Frustrated

It needs those, so put them in.

Hard to say if it's rebuildable or junk, but flaking paint is not a good sign. It can get into passages pretty easily when you've got it apart.

I dont know what the pump discharge ballweight looks like it wasnt in the carb. the only thing in the kit that might be it is a metal looking dowel or pin thats split down the side

Re: Holley 4160 600cfm

There are TWO check valves in the accelerator pump system.

One is directly under the discharge nozzle above/between the throttle bores. There are 2 designs. First design is a single metal dowel with a point on the end. Looks like a little tiny pencil that's been sharpened down to a nub- maybe 3/8" long. Second design is a two piece deal with a dowel (no point on the end) and a check ball that goes underneath it. The weight of the dowel presses down on the check ball to seal it up against it's seat. Far as I know, the two designs are interchangable and some kits come with both styles. I usually replace with whatever style it came with originally, which is usually the "pencil point" one.

Second check valve is built into the floor of the float bowl right there were the accelerator pump diaphragm is. Again, there are 2 styles. Older ones have a captive check ball built into the float blowl that is non-replacable. You just clean that style out as best you can with carb cleaner. Newer ones use a rubber "umbrella" that pushes/clips into place on the underside of the float bowl. This style is replacable and should always be replaced during a rebuild. The edges of the umbrella can get "wavy" in their old age and not seal up against the float bowl casting, defeating their purpose.

Yes, you need both of these check valves for your accelerator pump system to work properly. Having a non-functioning or barely-functioning accelerator pump system makes for misery trying to get the engine started when cold and when trying to apply the throttle quickly.

In my opinion EVERY carb is rebuildable, but whether it is worth it or not is a matter of personal opinion.
The start off right, the parts stores sell this gllaon of carb cleaner in a bucket with a little basket inside. GET ONE

Take the carb all apart and soak that bugger to get all that paint crap gone. put it in there and every 4 hours or so give the basket a little twist and shake action.

I gaurunteee the carb will come out cleaner than you have ever seen it before and ready to be rebuilt the right way
