electric to manual choke, new intake manifold?

1986 Camaro Sports Coupe, 5.0 v8, carbed, computer controlled distributor not the vacum secondary, 700r4 automatic trans, 86000 miles

I have a stock 4bbl q-jet rochester that is just shot (electric choke computer controlled carb), i think i fried it when i replaced my intake manifold gasket. Anyways when i was trying to get the car started again after replacing the gasket and retiming my car i was cranking it over and it backfired out of the carb, i think i fried some of the electronics in it. I really didn't know what i was doing at the time and i don't think i even had everything plugged into the carb and didn't have all the vacum lines hooked up when i tried to start it. So my carb just kept performing worse after that. On a cold start it will crank over and start up and then idle at like 2500rpm for about 10 minutes and it just keeps taking longer for it to idle down to normal operating speed. I'm not sure if its my carb i guess, could it possibly be my ecm? My neighbor whom i bought if from said the idler arm or something like that on the carb was sticking, i mean the car was sitting for 4+ years before i bought it. Do you guys think the carb is shot or could i have fried something else electrical in the car?

Anyways i have a 650cfm Holley carb and a Edelbrock TM-1 "Tarantula" intake manifold i can put on it but i'm not sure how to make the carb or intake manifold work with the car. The intake manifold has no spot for the egr valve, and everyone i've talked to said you need the egr hooked up for the car to run and others told me you can just plug it off and it will work so i don't know i guess. Could i use this intake manifold on the engine? The carb is manual choke, not computer controlled. So how does that hook up to all the vacum lines and what do i do with all the plug ins from the electric carb?

The intake manifold and the carb are from a 350 i have sitting in the garage where my car is in storage and is meant to go with that engine, but i have to put off the swap for another year to get the car rebuilt and performing smoothly first, i.e. rear suspension replacement, front end steering rebuild, new paint etc. Should i even bother with putting a different carb and intake manifold on the 5.0 or just wait till i swap in my 350 and just buy a rebuilt 4bbl electric rochester replacement carb for now?

Re: electric to manual choke, new intake manifold?

send in your carb in for a rebuild. it'll be back in a week or less. that's not too bad a price. or buy a rebuild kit for $25 and use the great details to rebuild at the top of this forum. Search this forum for the recent photo by photo rebuild thread; shows each step of the rebuild process (think it was naf's post)..That's the cheapest and easiest option.
