is 850cfm to big for a stock 78 350?

Hey!! I just swaped a rebuilt 350 out of a 78 corvette in my 86 iroc, it has a rochester 4 brl carb on it that would need a rebuilt.. I could get a good deal for a holley dbl pump 850 cfm from a friend. the engine is stock apard from shorty headers and no cat though dyno max muffle. would it run good with it or is it to big?

I'd say it would be way too big for a stock 350. a 600-650 should be plenty.

Way too big. An 850 even on my engine is too big, I tried it and put a 750 back on.

Re: is 850cfm to big for a stock 78 350?

If it was a vacuum secondary carb, I would say you'd be OK, even though it would be unnecessarily big. Being a mechanical secondary carb though, I would say it is too big. It will run fine under normal driving conditions, but it will be very finiky about when and how fast you can jump on the throttle. Thats not an issue with a vacuum secondary, as they are demand-based, not mechanically tied to the throttle pedal. (For example, a Quadrajet is basically a vacuum secondary carb, rated at 795cfm, and it came on everything from 305s to 454s and they work great)

If you want a mechanical secondary carb for a stock-ish 350 (I'm assuming that means a 200hp smogger) then I'd recommend either a 650 or 700cfm unit (Holley #4777 or #4778)
