87 bogging from a stop....any ideas?

i just bought my 1st camaro last tuesday..... and i am working the kinks out of this one as i can...

heres the issue... from a dead stop acceleration, my 87 4bbl will bog from the get go. almost to the point where i have to give so much gas that it will chip the tires. so i was checking out the threads and found one that seems to point the bogging to a accelerator pump linkage... cool right. well apparently the pervious owner changed this for it to pass smog... so its a good possibility that is the issue. it being to loose ...But, it also does it after each shift too. not nearly the intensity as the dead stop acceleration, but enough where your shaking your body forward and back to speed up the acceleration... lol only way to describe it... so i was thinking possibly the fuel filter?????? what do you all think....?????

never hurts to replace tune up parts. then you'll know it's not some $10 or $20 part killing your beast...

Re: 87 bogging from a stop....any ideas?

have you checked for vacuum leaks as of yet? You can in some cases have a good idle with a vacuum leak, but bogged acceleration. The reason being our carbs secondaries have a stop on them to only allow them to open so much. This stop is controlled by vacuum, at idle vacuum is high. When you go WOT vacuum disappears allowing the secondaries to open more. With no vacuum at all, the secondaries are allowed to open all the way, which is way to much for a 305, and probably most 350's. I found this out by experimenting with my 305 LG4 but disconnecting the vacuum line to the secondaries stop, which allowed them to open all the way. In my mind i thought "AH MORE POWA!" but when i tried it, she fell on her face from an overdose of gas

Have you tried easing it up in gas? How does it react? Bog? Or just fine?

If it's just fine, your secondaries are probably opening to soon, meaning a possible vacuum leak, or the stop spring is to loose.

Any error codes btw?

Re: 87 bogging from a stop....any ideas?

well usually when i first start the car and drive for a few minutes, its mine.. but i guess when it warms up, thats when the bogging under acceleraton happens. it doesnt matter if i ease into the pedal or stomp it, it will bog... now another example, if i were to do a mild brakestand, say bring the rpm up to 1000 and then take off, it wont bog ( my idle is fairly low at 550 on a regular basis).. what u all think...

Re: 87 bogging from a stop....any ideas?

My 85 was doing the same thing, I adjusted the secondarys to kick in later and it worked just fine. Over time the q-jets can loosen up on the secondary springs allowing too much air into the carb too quickly. This can lead to the legendary Quadrabog haha, you need an allen wrench and a regular wrench (dont remember the size). Then loosen the set nut and adjust the screw with the allen wrench and retighten the nut. I tried to do it in my driveway without running the car...it didnt work for me. Your best bet is to tune a little and test by going around the block.

Also you might check your timing...I wouldnt see it being your problem but if you pay attention to the timing mark while you rev it up and down and you see it jumping around, you could use a new timing chain (mine did...really bad). Make sure you isolate the advance too so that if you do see it jumping its not another issue.

Hope that helps!

Re: 87 bogging from a stop....any ideas?

Graymaro87, not sure of your skill level/knowledge of q-jets, but if it is the original carb from '87 and has never been "messed" with, I would tend to believe the accelerator pump diaphram is dried out and not pushing fuel through the carb. Just a thought. Maybe it's time for a rebuild.

Re: 87 bogging from a stop....any ideas?

Congrats on your first camaro. Before you go changing out or adjusting anything on the carb I'd take Scooter's advice. New plugs, wires, cap, rotor and ignition timing check along with fluid changes will give you a fresh start and you'll KNOW the basic tune up things are good. Your issue could be as simple as mal-adjusted timing-don't go swapping other parts just yet.

If YOU didn't install new tune up parts, they're not new.

When checking timing make sure it's advancing correctly. After re-connecting the esc the timing should run around 20-22 advanced at idle and advance to +30 when you rev it. You may have to estimate the amount as the timing marks don't go that high, but the important part is that it's advancing, not necessarily exactly how much.

Not sure what you mean by 'accelerator pump linkage' this should be non-adjustable and not require replacement.

thanks, well ive been making my way around to changing out the tune up parts, and im gonna change out wires, plugs, and cap this weekend. for what i know about Carburators is as much as i know about the japanese language.... lol but im a really quick learner... apparently the previous owner changed the accelerator pump for it to pass smog.. he had half a carb rebuild kit left over, mainly just gaskets, which didnt make sense to me seeing if you have it apart, why not replace them... but ne ways, i guess first things first ill finish the tune up and then try to mabay swing by a shop for the carb tweak... unless someone can walk me threw it....

The PO may have done the complete re-build. The kits come with parts for several different models and you'll always wind up with a bunch of stuff left over.

There's some stickys at the top of the carb forum that provide some service information on the stock carburetor as well as info on properly adjusting one. If you get ready we can help you through it.
