I know there are a few threads here about people doing this, I am just wondering if I could get some feedback on this.. I am sick of the gremlins with my TPI setup, it runs good then doesn't. Honestly, I'm just tired of it.. So I figure switch it over to carb...
Can I get some feedback on this, pros and cons. I know I need an intake, carb, distributor, and a fuel pressure regulator... I have never done this, but how hard could it be.. LOL...
I think I'm going to go with an RPM Air Gap intake, dual plane... I have a Demon 650 carb..... Not too sure about what wiring stays and what wiring goes... Is there a how-to thread here somewhere on this??
There's a how-to tech article in the technical articles section.
You will also need new gaskets, a throttle cable bracket, a throttle return spring bracket, and return springs.
I'm not 100% sure about your wiring, because I went from a V6 to a V8 when I did mine. I actually had to rewire my fuel pump relay, since it no longer got a signal from the ecm to turn the pump on after the 2 sec priming. (since the ecm was no longer getting input from the distributor)
Like jam019 said, you may not have a lot of clearance, especially since the pontiac hoods are lower than the camaro's. Plan on a drop-base air cleaner, and check with others to see what they could fit for an intake. Good luck
I have a v8 that went from a tpi to a carb. Wiring isnt a problem. Just wiring the dist and the electronic choke if you have one. The injectors wiring harness u wont need the tps sensor gone. I love the carb setup. I beleive it runs better.
I'm the opposite. I'd rather go from carb to TPI. I really don't like carbs. FI is harder to get setup and working but once you do it's definitely less of a hassle for day to day use.
I swapped my V6 for a carbed V8 last winter. It has its pros and cons. For me the deciding factor was cost. It was so much cheaper to go to a carb that it was a no-brainer. I will mention that I am still fine-tuning it though.
As was mentioned, there is a tech article on the swap. For the wiring, what you need to keep depends on a few things. I removed the A/C and the EGR/smog pump so all that wiring got removed as well. Other wiring you can safely remove includes the injector wiring harness, knock sensor, MAP/MAF sensor, IAT, O2, and coolant temp sensors. Leave the wire going to the temp sensor in the side of your cylinder head, thats for the gauge. Likewise with the oil pressure sender. Radiator fan, starter, alternator and coil wiring stays. The distributor you get will determine what you need to do with the coil wiring. I just cut the connector off the pink and white wires and soldered some terminals on the ends so I could connect them to my HEI coil's terminals.
For the fuel pump, if you have the 3-wire oil pressure sender then you don't need to do anything with the fuel pump relay as long as you leave the ECM in. The oil pressure sender closes a switch that runs the fuel pump after the 2 second prime cycle as long as you have at least 3psi of oil pressure. It may even work without the ECM as the carb should hold enough fuel in the bowls to start the car and keep it going till the OPS kicks in to run the fuel pump.
The great thing about going carb is simplicity easy of installation less to go wrong. However, Im a true blue EFI guy. I went through the efi troubleshooting with my SN95 after I built it up. Took me 3 months to correct and troubleshoot that car to run right all the while guys telling me to just slap a carb on it, if you have a spare ride to cruise in until the 3rd gen gets fixed do that and take the time to know your girl, in the long run it will be cheaper
Hey 92RS_Ttop I just wanna thank u for that info on the wiring, I've looked in the article and I've asked many many ppl but u are the first person that I have seen take the time to actually write it out so we could see it, thanks again. I'm currently goin through my swap and that helps a lot
