Electric Fuel Pump Selection - Original Carbed Car

Searched and searched...found info for an 87, but it seems that they are different (have a fuel pump in the tank already).

I have an 86 z28, stock lg4 has a rod knocking, so I have bought a running 350 that was originally TBI from a truck. It does not have a boss for a mechanical fuel pump like my car has. This means I have to go electric. I am putting the stock q-jet, dizzy, ect on this engine.

My understanding is that my 86 does not have an electric pump in the tank like the 87 does. It seems that I have two options:

1. Put an electric pump inline along the frame rail as close as possible to the tank.

2. Put a fuel pump in the tank.

It really doesn't matter to me which one I do, but I am sure that one is better than the other. I don't mind dropping the tank, but I don't care too much for having to run new lines from the tank to the engine. This is just a DD, so long term durability wins over maximum performance potential.

From what I gather since I have the carbed pickup, the easiest thing to do is to just mount an inline pump. Any specific recommendations?

thanks

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Selection - Original Carbed Car

An in-tank pump would be preferable for me, all else being equal. The in-tank will run cooler, won't require splicing into existing fuel lines and won't be subject to damage from debris that may be kicked up under the car.

For me everything wasn't equal though. I installed an in-line pump near the tank which works in addition to the small in-tank that came on my '87. The effort to drop my tank with the exhaust welded in was too much for me.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Selection - Original Carbed Car

Did some more reading and decided to go with a carter electric. Couldn't easily find a fuel injected pickup for the tank...and then I would have to deal with EFI pressures, not ~6psi, which could cause many more issues down the line. The carter is internally regulated at 6psi, and from what I have read, is pretty reliable and quite.
