Q-Jet sticking at WOT

Hey guys! This is my first post here, and I doubt it will be my last. I have an '86 Trans Am with LG4 engine that I have been working on for a while. A problem that I am having now that I just can't figure out, is that sometimes when I hold the throttle wide open, it will stick open until I either blip the throttle, or shut it down and manually open and shut the throttle with the linkage on the carburetor. Other than that, the car idles perfectly, has no flat spots or hesitation, and has great power at full throttle. I am new to carbs, as I have been building and working on EFI cars previously, so all of this stuff is new to me. My only experience with carburetors is on motocross bikes, since I used to race. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

Re: Q-Jet sticking at WOT

I have a 86 iroc w/lg4 that stuck once in a while.. I finally discovered the linkage was sticking to the air cleaner pan. I loosened it, and it never stuck again. I blew the pipe between the cat, and the muffler by accident when I shut it off while it was stuck, and turned the key on, and..... booom! those backfires will do it.

Yeah those wide open throttle shutdowns will definitely do some damage to the cat. I actually feel pretty lame right about now because right after I created this post I noticed some marks under the air cleaner where the secondary linkage was rubbing. So you were exactly right, that's where my problem was. I also cleaned the carb thoroughly and so much gunk and varnish came out it was rediculous.

Maybe you could use another air cleaner pan. I had another one laying around, and used it, and I never had that happen again. Glad I could be of some help. Don't feel stupid. I believe they (GM) crunched the whole damn thing down too far. That shouldn't happen.
