help going to store now what part do i have to buy

i have a canadian non cc 87 trans am lg4. there is a plug on top of the carb. two wires coming out of it. one goes into the wireing harness and other is hanging there. looks like there use to be one or two sensors on the thermostat housing. where is it supposed to be pluged in and WHAT DOES IT DO? if its a sensor on the thermostat whats it called and ill will buy it now and thread it in. thanks guys.
