I put an Edelbrock 1406 Carb on my L69 and when i start it up first thing in the morning/day the idle shoots up to about 2200 RPM. I can kick it down by just tapping the throttle, then once it's warmed up it starts up fine every time. Does anyone have a suggestion on what I should be looking for to resolve this? Before I modded the engine it used to start up to about 1400 RPM and kick down on its own, with the Q-Jet. Any ideas?

I'm running an MSD 6AL Ignition Box, MSD Coil, and MSD mechanical advance distributor. I capped off the front vacuum ports on the new carb, and hooked up the electric choke. The Q-Jet needed to be rebuilt anyway and I was doing the ignition, cam, and heads so I went for the carb and intake as well. Next up, headers.
I'm actually going to give that a shot. I have the normal idle set to about 800 RPM so I'm going to bring that down to 600 RPM then adjust the fast idle (hi-idle) down to about 1500-1600 RPM or so. Thanks for the info.

you can leave the normal idle at 800 rpm or so and try lowering the fast idle first...then see how it is and take it from there,
