Need more info on your car. Do you have headers? What type of rear end gears do you have? Any other mods? Etc.

What are you willing to do? How much can you spend?

If you want to be able to outrun cars like that, you've pretty much got to be willing to replace the whole engine and transmission.

The carb is not holding you back, although a little tuning would probably help it run a little better.

The rear end will have a three letter code embossed on it. Usually something like 2HT (my car for example) This code tells you what gearing you have and if it a limited slip. Well limited slips will also have a metal tag attached to one of the cover bolts. The Borg Warner rear ends are 9 bolts.

The code would tell you what gears and carrier the factory put in it. With a 23-year-old car, it should be assumed that you need to pull the cover and count the teeth & inspect the carrier.

A 9-bolt in an '86 would be very rare, only 74 out of ~97k Trans Ams and IROCs produced in 1986. All the more reason to pull the cover and verify what's inside.

http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/tr...ification.html (Rear End Identification)

Here is some more info on the 9 bolt rear ends. As far as oil goes, I don't know but I am sure someone else will chime in. I wan't to say the limited slip oil with the additive they sell at the dealer. But don't quote me on it.
