The rear end will have a three letter code embossed on it. Usually something like 2HT (my car for example) This code tells you what gearing you have and if it a limited slip. Well limited slips will also have a metal tag attached to one of the cover bolts. The Borg Warner rear ends are 9 bolts.
The code would tell you what gears and carrier the factory put in it. With a 23-year-old car, it should be assumed that you need to pull the cover and count the teeth & inspect the carrier.
A 9-bolt in an '86 would be very rare, only 74 out of ~97k Trans Ams and IROCs produced in 1986. All the more reason to pull the cover and verify what's inside.
Well heres a picture of the cover and i count 9 bolts??? What type of oil do we use in these style rearends so i can take this cover off and take a peek inside!
Here is some more info on the 9 bolt rear ends. As far as oil goes, I don't know but I am sure someone else will chime in. I wan't to say the limited slip oil with the additive they sell at the dealer. But don't quote me on it.
humm now this has really sparked my intrest. Is their any way to tell if the rear end is orginal?? and if so let me know lol it would be neat to something a little rare for once! and as for the oil i was thinking the same thing. unless someone else says something?
