Can we assume you have a q-jet now?

If that is the case, the Edelbrock will add 0 hp over a properly operating q-jet, and may reduce the power output.

An Edelbrock Performer intake may add as much as 5-10 HP - after you fix what is actually limiting performance.

Go to the FAQ forum. Look for a thread about differences between 305 engines and performance improvements. It's all discussed there.

Re: How much Horsepower will a Edlebrock Carb ADD?

agreed....no power increase....and you will not notice a power increase from just an intake w/carb.....not significant anyway..... go here http://www.thirdgen.org/technical-articles and read some of these....

Intake manifold - perhaps 5-10 HP with other changes (exhaust, cam, air cleaner).

Intake manifold & Edelbrock carb - same or less power than with intake manifold and other changes like exhaust, cam, air cleaner. Probably less.

In case the message isn't getting through, the Edelbrock carb is NOT something to put on to increase power (unless the engine doesn't currently have a carb).

Did you read that FAQ thread? At least the first couple of posts?

Understand that if the car has the originally-installed computer controlled carb, in order to run the Edelbrock you'll have to change the intake manifold or use a spreadbore to squarebore adapter (the Edelbrock won't bolt to a stock intake manifold), change the distributor to a vacuum/mechanical advance unit (the stock distributor uses the computer to control ignition advance, and without the input provided by the stock q-jet, it won't properly control timing), and if you have an automatic transmission, some means to lock up the torque converter clutch (if you have an '82 automatic, this is optional, but it's best to have it functioning for a variety of reasons).

One more time, in case the message still hasn't gotten through - Replacing a stock computer controlled q-jet with an Edelbrock Performer 600 CFM carb is not a performance improvement, will cost you more than it would to fix whatever might be wrong with your q-jet, and basically is a stupid way to spend money on your car.

If the intake manifold, carb, and distributor are missing, and the computer harness is all hacked up, that is a slightly different story. But, you'd still be better off to get that stuff used and install it vs. putting on an Edelbrock carb, IMO.
