Heavy Thick White Smoke....

Alright, So today i go to start my car (86 Firebird Stock 305). Im waiting for it to warm up,and i notice that its taking longer than normal. Then the RPM'S started to rise to 2000. *this have never happned before*. I got nervous,so i shut it off. The minute i shut her off, The car began to shake an make a awful noise coming from the motor. It stopped pretty quick, but the shaking was really heavy, Anyway, i noticed tha that white smoke started to come from underneath my hood,i poped it,took off my air cleaner assembly,an saw that smoke was pouring out of my Carb. I open'd it up an there was more sitting in there. This has never happned before,I've owned this car for over a year an nothing bad has happned. Im confused as ****,and i dont want her to die on me. PLEASE HELP!

thank you,
Cam

The white smoke was just gasoline vapor from the run-on (the shaking you described).

Check your choke operation. The high idle was probably just the engine running better as it warmed up, but the high idle cam wasn't released (this should happen when you tap the throttle).

Had you tapped the throttle before shutting the engine off, it probably wouldn't have run on when you turned off the ignition.

That's what I'd guess. Is your choke light coming on?

Check the power to the choke thermostat. The engine has to be running to get 12 volts to it.
