Stall.... without the stall...

So I bought this 1986 Camaro tha is supposed to be completely stock except for the rear gears which I believe because of the appearance of the car and underhood and such, it has the 305 motor and 700r tranny ..... anyways...

The problem is when the car is sitting at a stop and also when it goes to open the 4 barrel, there is a pause. Not a slight hesitation but a literal second or two stall before anything happens. I was wondering if this was a carb problem, if you ease into it from a stop it will go fine but seem a little slugish and at WOT the pause kills me. Any help on this would be great, I'm not sure where to start honestly.

One more thing, sometimes when I put it in neutral or park the RPMS go up to around 1500 when at normal idle it only hits 700 but if you tap the gas, most of the time the rpms drop back down to normal. What would cause this to happen?

What air cleaner is on the car? If open element, that is what is causing your off-idle hesitation. You need the thermovac system on the stock-type air cleaner snorkel to provide warmed air to the engine. Unless this is a non-computer Canadian car, it's hard to tune this out of the system without the thermovac system operational.

For your WOT issue (commonly called "bog"), it's the secondary air valve (AV) opening too soon. Two things control this: 1) the choke pull-off ("vacuum break" in the factory nomenclature); and 2) the AV tension adjustment. There is a tech article linked from the "welcome to the carb forum" sticky and the TGO home page on how to adjust this. The choke pull-off is best tested with a hand-held vacuum pump - if it doesn't pull in with vacuum, and hold in without continued pumping, it's bad and should be replaced.

Your high idle issue is something sticking, either the throttle cable, carb throttle arm, or the choke mechanism.

Re: Stall.... without the stall...

Thanks for your input and its got the stock snorkel on it but it is missing a vacuum hose on the circular part on the snorkel arm but I'm not sure where it is supposed to run to when I replace it.

As far as the AV goes, I'll have to take a look at it when I get back in town and once again thanks for the advice, I hope I can play with it and get here going smooth.
