Can some one please show me or tell me where to hook up the hoses to a charcoal canister. The canister has two nipples one says to carb and one says to tank. I also have the purge valve with two big nipples and one small nipple. My car was a fuel injected v6 but now i swap'd in a v8 with a holley DP carb.
Right now i hooked "to tank" to one big nipple on the purge and the other big nipple on the purge to the gas tank vent in the engine bay. the small nipple on the purge is hooked to the timed vaccum port on the carb. The "to carb" is connected to a T with the brake booster and full vaccum.
I noticed driving the car like this that i lost most of the power assest on the brakes. but i sprayed the engine bay with starter fluid and couldnt find a vaccum leak.
I also had to up the idle up to about 1200 rpm. it was at 900 before i hooked the canister. any lower and it surges and at 900 like i had it before it wont even idle just dye.
Vac at idle (1200) is stedy "ish" at 14
Someone please help im tired of my car smellin like gas and it quit for the most part after i hooked up the canister but i dont want the car to idle at 1200 rpm.

I took mine completely out when I swapped to carb - had no fuel smell anywhere - I just ran a fuel injection hose on the third fuel line to go out under the car in front of the wheel. Are you sure you don't have a fuel leak somewhere else? "cause I've seen alot of folks just do the same as I did and remove that canister.
Well when i first took it out i plugged the line that runs from the tank to the canister, because when i left it open i noticed it was wet with a very small bit of gas. I now know that i probably shouldnt have had it plugged because it is the only vent for the gas tank. and probably why my tank was building so much pressure. But i really would like to hook up the canister again.
Ive been thinking tonight that i had the purge valve between the gas tank and the canister. This seems wrong to me now, shouldnt it be between the canister and the manifold vac?

I don't remember exactly how it was connected on my 1992 - but I do remember this - the ECM controls the purging of the canister - it sends a signal every so often to allow the fumes to get sucked through the induction via the vacuum tubing - so it makes sense that the valve runs between the induction and the canister, and not between the tank and the canister.
But - if you aren't using the ECM anymore - will it still work?
And, as I stated - I'm "remembering" - might want to wait for better info from another source
"The charcoal canister purge cycle is controlled different ways: either by a thermostatic vacuum switch, a solenoid or by a timed vacuum source. The thermostatic switch is installed in the coolant passage and prevents canister purge when the engine is below a certain temperature. The solenoid is usually controlled by a computer and is used on feedback controlled fuel systems. The computer determines when canister purge is appropriate. Depending on the system, this can be engine operating temperature, engine speed, evaporative system pressure or any combination of these. The timed vacuum source uses a manifold vacuum controlled diaphragm to control canister purge. When the engine is running, full manifold vacuum is applied to the top tube of the purge valve which lifts the valve diaphragm and opens the valve."
