What should the timing be on a 305 carb that used to be a tpi setup. Right now it is +2 degrees. Thanks for the help.

i started my carb swap out at 10* advance. i ended up with 12* at idle.

I'm at 6 degrees, but will bump it up to 8 soon.

Assuming we're talking about a non-computer carb, initial timing at idle with the vacuum disconnected is typically 8-12 degrees BTDC.

The better way to set the timing is the total mechanical. You need to have either a dial-back timing light or a marked damper to do it because the 34-36 degrees BTDC at the RPMs that produce the max advance w/o the vacuum advance connected is beyond the timing tab.

Yeah 36* total is what I would try, make sure it doesn't ping, I would get an adjustable vacuum canister though or it might ping, I have mine set to 5*, so I have 35* total mechanical + 5* vacuum = 40 total. Hook up the vacuum to full manifold for best performance and fuel economy. Hook it to ported vacuum for lower emissions. My distributor has 22* of advance in it so my base timing is 13*.

Play around with 8-12 base, you need a dial back light to do total timing.
