Help, Pinging at Cruise at only 8 deg timing

Hey guys,
I have a brand new 350 crate motor at 350 hp. I have a holley 600 electric choke carb. Timing is set at 8 degrees advanced and I still have that annoying pinging at cruise. I may have put mid grade fuel in last fill up, Im not sure to be honest. Motor only has 350 miles on it as Im still breaking it in. Any help or advice would be appreciated!

Re: Help, Pinging at Cruise at only 8 deg timing

my first guess would be a timing issue, did the crate motor come with the balancer and timing tab already installed, or did you have to do it, i.e. use parts from another motor. they are not all the same... i just cant grasp the idea of 8* and pinging...if that is the prob.

I concur check the real timing. Is zero on the tab actually TDC at the piston ?

Probably need more info on the setup. But what is total timing at cruising rpm? Maybe too much advance at that point, too much vacuum advance etc. Figure 36 total without the vac. adv. with another 10 degrees for that. If your cruising at 2500 rpm you might be over that some. And I'd sure run premium fuel in that engine.
