'83 z28 L69 305 carb

I recently bought a '83 z28 with a L69 305, the whole car is stock and is in need of some upgrades. Anyone know a good carb/intake setup that works well with this engine?? Ive tried tuning my quadraject and i took it off to rebuild it but i think its time for a new carb anyway. any advice is appreciated

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

Keep the carb. You won't do any better.

An Edelbrock Performer intake would be a slight step up. Cam and exhaust will help it all work together.

Re: '83 z28 L69 305 carb

Well im planning on swapping the 305 with something a little better eventually, but for the time being i wanted a better carb and intake manifold. I already have a flowmaster catback kit on the car. As of right now the camaro is just a project car, but i want it to be ready for spring time.

Go ahead and get a better intake manifold. It will transfer over to a 350 (assuming similar heads).

There isn't a better street performance carb available than the computer q-jet. None will produce more power on a 305 or a 350, none will provide better fuel economy on a 305 or a 350, none will produce better driveability on a 305 or 350.

Just in case there is any misunderstanding, you might think you want a better carb, but you already have the best carb possible.

Re: '83 z28 L69 305 carb

haha i agree the q-jet is one of the best, but mine isnt wat it used to be haha. The z28 i just bought was orginally going to be sent to the junkyard after it was in a accident in the early 90's but my neighboor saved it from the crusher. So long story short it sat from about '96 till this summer wen i got it. Im replacing the intake manifold and im having my carb rebuilt this winter. I was just wondering if its worth it to either get my carb rebuilt, buy a better rebuild qjet, or try a different carb. But i'll stick with my q-jet for now

As long as your q-jet isn't FUBAR, a rebuild will typically do. Sometimes some internal things like the throttle position sensor need to be replaced, but that's still less expensive than a different carb. Even a professionally rebuilt q-jet will only cost you around $300, still cheaper than getting something else.

Re: '83 z28 L69 305 carb

thanks for the info haha, i got one more question though. If i were to keep my carb and replace my intake manifold, what type should i look for? i was gonna get a used performer intake for $50, or should i just go with a new one? And does it have to be egr?

It needs to be a spread bore type. Not all Performers are.

EGR is required to be emissions legal.
