Help with Fuel Pickup...

Hey guys,

I have a 92 camaro that I have been working on for about 6 months now. I have tossed the old engine and trans and replaced them with a new 700R4 and a new Crate SBC 350. I have decided to go carbed instead of the TBI setup it had. I also want to use a mechanical pump instead of the electric in-tank pump it has now.

The new stuff is finally all in and I am down to the last few steps. I bought a mechanical fuel pump and fuel push-rod as well as a mounting plate, but my question is how do I go about turning the sending unit into a simple pickup tube? I don't even know which lines are which back there as there seems to be 3 or maybe 4 of them going into the pump from what I can see at the access panel which was cut. I bought some 3/8 fuel line to make a tube if necessary but I don't really know where to start.

If anyone could get me going with a step by step guide I would really appreciate it!! Thanks!

Re: Help with Fuel Pickup...

What cam? IIRC, not all roller cams have the fuelpump lobe for a mechanical pump.
On my iPhone, so I don't know how to send a link.
Search carb sending unit, there's a couple ways to use a TPI unit & convert it to a carb unit with hard line & 3/8 fuel line. Good luck

Re: Help with Fuel Pickup...

My cam does have the lobe. Also, I did do a search for that but didn't find exactly what I am looking for as far as instructions go. It seems most people who have discussed it already have an idea of how to do it. I am pretty clueless.

Re: Help with Fuel Pickup...

For the feed line, remove the elec pump & replace that with the hose, making a furl for the hose to slip over & clamp it on, or hard line with a compression fitting, put a new sock strainer on the end of which ever is used. If you use rubber hose, make sure it's the type that is submersible in gas & will last.
Or
Leave the elec pump hooked up & put on a fuel pressure regulator with a dedicated return built in.

Does your mechanical pump have a return made into it?

From what I've read, some carbd 3rd gens used an electric helper pump, but I may be misunderstanding that.
There are some guys using the tank pump with a fuel pressure regulator with a return line and have no problems at all. I have no idea what the stock pressures, so maybe someone will chime in.
I don't know which is the stock return line.

Re: Help with Fuel Pickup...

Also, if you do take out the tank pump, make sure you make your new line the same length with the strainer as the in tank pump assembly

Re: Help with Fuel Pickup...

Thank you for the information. I ended up connecting 3/8 hard line after removing the pump but I do not have a new sock for it so I closed it up like that. I will be putting in an in-line fuel filter up near the carb though. My mechanical pump does have a return. Do I do anything special to any of the other lines or am I pretty much done?

Re: Help with Fuel Pickup...

If the strainer is good, personally I would use it.
A few ppl have done it with out one, but IMO I would use it.
That should do it.

What carb? If you have a 700R4, you will need a geometry corrected for the TV cable, regardless if Holley or Edelbrock.

Re: Help with Fuel Pickup...

Yeah, I was wondering about that too. Been trying to figure out a bracket setup to hold the cables in alignment with the carb. The only thing I found that supposedly works is way out of my price range and it's a kit for like 140 bucks. I have an edelbrock 1406 and a 700R4.

This

Summit link in post # 2

Call the tech line 1-330-630-0240 to make sure it will work. IIRC, the Thunder Series it doesn't fit.

You probably need a throtle cable bracket, but not exactly sure.
I'll see if I can find the thread with all that info, take me a few mins.

Re: Help with Fuel Pickup...

Thanks, and yeah I actually called summit earlier today and they are the ones who told me about that 140 dollar kit. I asked if there was any other option and he said maybe but he wasn't sure. It would be awesome if all I needed was that part you sent in the link, but I won't get my hopes up. :/

This is an education in TV cable operation & adjustment.

Re: Help with Fuel Pickup...

I disconnect the in tank pump, get an electric low pressure pump, about $40 bucks then a pressure regulator ana a guage on my fuel rail to the double pumper.Just locate your electric pump on a frame rail or somewhere easy to get to.Ground one side and connect your hot wire to an ignition on leadHot wireb on coil, starter, elec choke, etc. As far as your input line,it's usually the larger one.If you cant tell, just turn on your ign and see which one the fuel comes out of.As far as your bracket,go to any junkyard and find an old pickup with an A/T,about $2.00 bucks if they even charge you.panhead

Re: Help with Fuel Pickup...

I didn't take the part number of the kit because I wasn't going to pay that much for one, but he said it came with the tv cable and another cable but I forget which. As for that site, yeah I took a look at it from another thread and it seems very helpful though they also offer a kit which is very expensive. Not sure what my intake is but I will find out. I had the engine built at a place in Arizona.

Re: Help with Fuel Pickup...

panhead201 has a good idea. If that would work, it would save $, if not, then a few bucks may not matter, but thats up to you. The jyard here will do exchanges but no refund. IDK how they are in your area.

Arizona?? When winter sets in here, I miss the desert!! LOL
