Re: Carburetor rebuild

  1. That steel line that's crimped, is your power brake line. YOu can buy a piece of that material at the parts store. Comes in sticks of various lengths. Don't try to bend it by hand; go to Home Depot or the like, and in the plumbing section, you'll find a tubing bender. Might want to sonsider doing the same for the fuel line if it's damaged or if it's a "maypop" rubber one.
  2. While you're there, pick up a gallon of lacquer thinner, and a METAL bucket or other container of some sort, large enough to hold the carb. Tear it COMPLETELY down and soak all the parts in thinner, except for the float and the electric parts.
  3. In the pics from underneath, near the front of the carb, you can see some small plugs in little "towers" that stick down into holes in the throttle pate. Every one of those is leaking. (there are 4) You can't really see it but they are, especially the one that looks impossibly clean compared to the others. They are made of some other kind of metal besides the chinesium the main casting is, lead maybe; whatever it is, it always has the dissimilar metal electrolysis corrosion problem, BAD, and the carb body turns to white powder next to them and evaporates. Then, even a very tiny pinhole leak there will allow an ENORMOUS amount of fuel to get sucked out of the fuel bowl and into the intake, especially at idle and cruise, since at those times there's high vacuum (suction) on the bottom of them; the result is a rich idle and HORRIBLE gas mileage, in case that sounds familiar. Wire-brush all of them and all around them down to shiny new metal, sterilize them with clean new thinner, and epoxy them over with the JB Weld that has the steel filler. Do this after everything is cleaned up, and bake it in the oven on "warm" for a few hours to set the epoxy fully hard.

Clean, scrub, blow out every nook and cranny. Then soak and scrub and blow out. And on and on until you would eat off of it.

Re: Carburetor rebuild

thanks for the feed back guys! this is my first Quadrajet rebuild so i very unfamiliar with it, the only 2 questions i have now are 1. what do rebuild kits useually come with? a friend of mine said screws, gaskets and new jets and that threw me off, and 2. (this is directed on step 3 by sofakingdom) what holes are you talking about you mean the ones i zoomed in on? if so, how do i fix it?

thanks again

Re: Carburetor rebuild

oh and to mention one more thing, the carbs throttle was always getting a little stuck when ever the engine was on (some one said it was maniflod vacuum and a bad throttle shaft) (stuck I.E 650 rpm- push all way in and let settle- now at 1500 rpm)

i was wondering what i can do for that so it wont get stuck any more

thanks again

Re: Carburetor rebuild

so after taking the carb down to a friend of mine, we began to look over the carb, to my dismay i found out the reason the throttle was getting stuck was the throttle shaft was worn and this was causing a major vacuum leak and definetly needs either a new lower half or to get a new carb: range $300-$600

so my hope from here is if anyone has any known ways of fixing this in any way, because i dont feel like getting a new carb for my car so im in desprit need of help!

thanks for any input!!!!

Re: Carburetor rebuild

You can use a bushing for that shaft problem. You can drill out the holes and gently tap in the right size bushing. You will need to get a float with your carb kit they come separate.
