Sputter-Sputter-Gasp-Gasp

I'm sure many posts have been made on this subject, but none have shown up in the Carb board yet...
I've obviously got a problem w/the Holley 600.
the floats seem fine, and acts fine on the way down hills, but i'm having problems on the starts. should i rais the floats some?
fuel slightly trickles out at a level sitting from the peep holes.
I've got a smokin'(and anemic) 305 here by thge way.

I don't think the float level has anything to do with your problem. That sounds liek the level is fine, maybe even a tad high. Have you tried pumping the gas once or twice before starting it?

Currently running w/max vacuum of 17" at idle...
When I hit the gas, it drops for a second to about 12" and rises to about 20".
Sorry I didn't mention this.

basically it appears to choke the car out.
i was driving today, up a hill, lost alot of power. shifted down to 2nd...not enough power...
1st gear got me up the mild incline at about 30 mph
i realize i still need to adjust my TV cable, but the car revs fine when stationary, but when in use (moving) it doesn't react well.
All suggestions are appreciated

I don't know much about holleys, but is it possible that the PV is stuck down? I would think that would do a lot of the same stuff as you describe.

not too sure, but i yanked the carb and disassembled it...

and think the power valve was bad but have a new one anyway.
It has #69 jets and I'm at sea-level
compression is somewhere between 8.0-8.5 I think on the basically stock 78 Caprice 305.
stock cam(earlier mentioned getting 17" vacuum) and a Torker II intake.
Anyone else wanna confirm or refute the earlier diagnosis based on my symptoms?
Anyone?
Anyone? ? ?

Hey Duff, when you rebuild it check for a blown powervalve and install a power valve saver. I'm almost sure you don't have one. I can't see in the picture very well, but what kind of choke does it have? Manual, electrical? Set the idle by leaning the mixture until there is a large drop off in vaccum then back off 1/4 turn. Those jets do sound rather large but it all depends on carbs. If I were you I'd try 62 - 64 in the front and 64 - 66 in the back (if you take my suggestion to replace the metering plate, which will probably need done anyway considering the size of the primary jets). The idle hard starting sounds like a mis-adjusted idle or a blown powervalve, has it just recently started it since you've replaced the plugs? Did you foul them out again? The jets don't matter at idle, at idle it's contained within the idle circuit. My idea here is that you've been taking it cruising way rich then it fouls out your plugs which burns off after being started for a few minutes.

suprisingly FTA, the saver is already installed
it's an electric choke and i've only got a single pumper...
But I picked up both 64's and 66's at the store today.
Have yet to remove the plugs for reading.

They seem like big jets for a 305. I have a 305 with RPM manifold and headers and I run 62 primaries.
