My '87 verts rear speakers look ugly as hell. I have a kick *** system in my Z but it looks like hell. The speakers can't be tucked in because of the convertible top (the way it folds down). Does anyone have a good looking solution to this problem area? If I were to install smaller speakers, the system wouldn't sound that good. The problem is with the speaker magnet it's to large for the space. Any suggestion would be helpful. Thanks Rick

Are you reffering about the 5.25 speakers that mounts on the rear passengers sail panels? If so, I installed some Soundstream Exact 5.2 fit perfectly there but I had to cut the panel to make it fit perfectly without rubbing. You can also install some focal slim line in there. And even the new Eclipse SC8355, they are 3 way and 5.25. They have separate tweeter and a 3'' in a special holder if I am not mistaken... They sound pretty good in my friend's convertible gta and the magnet cleared the mounting bracket
on my vert i just used pioneer 6.25 but just added about an 1 1/2 spacer to keep the speakers tuck in and they work perfect to rattles and a lot better quality than stock

Does it still fit behind the factory speaker covers then?
The problem on the convertibles is the extra brace behind the speaker. Stock 5" round speakers fit fine but if you want to go bigger, they tend to be deeper and then you're in trouble.
I bought my vert with 6.5" oval speakers sticking out of the sail panels, attached with 3" drywall screws (yeah, don't ask, I got the car from Red-neck-ville, MS). (I can't believe the censorship on this board, you can't even spell "red-neck" without the dash. This board IS going down the drain)
What I did to fit 6.5" speakers was I marked the brace where the speaker was hitting and I ground down the brace a little to allow room for the speaker. No issues since.
The real problem with a sound system in a convertible is that the sound just gets blown out on the highway (afterall, sound IS just moving air). I thought I could add some speakers under the dash (above feet) to improve the sound quality while moving. Anybody done that?

I put a Delco-Bose system in my vert, so obviously I have the kick panel enclosures with speakers/amps. They don't sound too bad; you don't have the issue of the sound bouncing off the windshield with those. I suppose if you put some nice speakers down there, it would be great. Lord knows the delco-bose systems of the 80s and 90s can't hold up to today's systems, but I'm happy with mine.
In the back I got two 6 inch delco bose speakers out of some newer Caddy with Caddy 6x9 speaker amps. Those don't sound bad, either, but they are lacking in the bass department. They also aren't in any kind of special enclosure, like Delco-Bose systems usually are from the factory. Maybe that's affecting it, but I'm gonna make some custom enclosures for em.
i had originally put them back there with the use of Spacers that I cut out of
3/4" (might have been thicker) plywood and painted black - the same color as the exposed plastic of the speaker grills.
When I had my interior re-done the seats were re-covered in Oak Tweed.
The interior guy covered the sail panels in the same material and covered the
spacers that I had made with the Oak Tweed. It looks very good.
The pic attached shows the rear interior but unfortunatly the photo was not taken to emphasize what was done on the spacers.
This might be the best bet for those of you who want more umph from the rear in your vert. Cut yourself a spacer in which to mount the bigger speakers and then cover that spacer in a material that matches or compliments your interior...

I am thinking of using stock BMW M3 speakers. They are separates and have their own formed box... I've been looking at pictures... they look like they would fit. The speaker is even ported. Later on down the line, you could put better speakers in the box... but it is the box that will help the integrity of the sound.
