Re: please can anybody help me with info on the tonneau cover

i belive what he is talking about is the wire that comes from the handle that attaches to the key shaped thing under the tonneau if you were to fold the back seat and gently turn the little arm that has a hole where the cable was conected the back of the top will pop up the manual realease cables will lift the tonneau after that if in tact my solenoids stopped working before and i found that the saftey switch that doesn't allow the tonneau to open if the trunk is comes unplugged maybe check that after u check middle switch for power in the trunk below the lift motor behind courtseylight it is a white connector if i remember there is also a wiring diagrahm on here somewhere for all of it

reading ur question again mine just has the wire looping through the little hole in the arm but it's an 88 the weird key shaped thing slides in perpindicular to the arm i believe the key thing is what acually holds top down kinda like a cam lock type of thing for the love of camera i need one bad got alittle carried away above srry

Here you go. Here's mine . . .

Note; for those with older ASC a rod system was used instead of the cable style. The set-up was slightly different but the principal is the same.

iroctopless - Thanks for posting these photos - When I bought my 'vert last Summer, the latch mechanism was a bunch of parts scattered in the trunk. I found this site, and your pictures, which I printed up and took straight down into the garage. Fixing the latch then took about five minutes. This is a great site.

Thanks for the pics also. I have took my assembly apart over 3 years ago and forgot how to put it back together. Its not like we can go to our neighbors and look at their car. LOL I love and hate these oddball cars.

Re: please can anybody help me with info on the tonneau cover

On a related note, when I open the tonneau cover these days it doesn't support itself and stay open any more, I have to hold it.

Can anyone shed light on what I can adjust or replace to make it stay open?

Thanks

Bungle

Re: please can anybody help me with info on the tonneau cover

The cover should stay up by means of two torsion bars. You can see them criss-crossing near the bottom of my pic . . .

They are a fairly bullet-proof way of making a "spring" to keep the cover up. The only two things I can think of that would make it fail is if one of the bars should break (unlikely) or if one of the ends became unfastened (more likely). They provide lift because one end of each bar is secured to the cover and the other end to the body of the car. The tension (twist) on the bars is greatest with the cover down, thus they naturally want to hold the cover in the up position.
Check the torsion bars and make sure the ends are secure where they should be. They retain their spring-rate pretty good over time and don't normally just fail. Is it possible that a foreign object may have dislodged one of the ends?

Re: please can anybody help me with info on the tonneau cover

Iroctopless.. thanks for that will check the condition of the bars. They haven't failed, as in the cover slams down, rather they have become noticably weaker in holding the cover up.

I'll post what i find.

Re: please can anybody help me with info on the tonneau cover

Ok had a look at the torsion bars and while they are securely in place, they appear to have been zip-tied together.. sure this must be a bad thing...

That does make a person go

Have you tried removing them to see exactly why they might be there?
