What to do after a wreck?

Unfortunately I was in a slight fender bender in my vert. The geico claims adjuster doesn't know if they will elect to total my vehicle out or repair it. the damage isn't huge but will probably require a new front bumper, front spoiler, right headlight bracket, hood, and right fender. The damage seems to be completely cosmetic, but according to the claims adjuster they will be talking to a third party to figure out how much the vehicle is worth in the current market. I checked around on ebay autotrader cars.com and yahoo autos but didn't really see many vehicles that matched a 91-92 camaro rs convertible with v8 and 5 speed even though i have a 6 speed in it now. Speaking to the shop that i have elected to do the repairs they estimated about 4,300 to repair it using all original parts if they can find them. I'm not sure on what to expect so anyone with any experience please let me know. I just don't want to get the shaft on this. I really want my car repaired even if that means it will have a salvaged title now.

Re: What to do after a wreck?

Sorry about your ride.

I would assume that you should also have the right to get your vehicle appraised for current market value by a recognised appraiser. It's a little more difficult appraising a vehicle post accident, but if you have any additional info, documentation, receipts and pictures prior to the accident that would go a long way towards arriving at a fair value. I just don't put much faith into the insurance company being the sole provider for 2nd and 3rd "opinions" be it adjusters or repair shops.

I've have my ride currently appraised at slightly more than $21,000cdn. And that is the agreed upon replacement value (the "19A" clause that's used in the insurance industry) should anything ever happen, god forbid.
Being prepaired is the key, but you might still be able to put a case together after the accident. You always have the right to challenge the insurance company's decision.

Good luck.

Re: What to do after a wreck?

The estimate you are getting is way way off. The parts are less than a $1000 new online. Unless you have major damage to the underlying pieces you should be able to get out for around 2k.

Re: What to do after a wreck?

Why they may total it is if it pushed the headlights back into what I call the header panel (even though thats used for the headlight fiberglass panel). It is actually part of the frame of the car. It sounds exactly what happened to mine before I got it and its now listed as a damaged car. Even though everything is aligned and fits up fine. That part is bent and you can see hammer marks on it.

You can choose to "buy the car back" and have the shop fix it. Its all a matter of what you want to do. Finding good GM parts is hard to do. Luckly the only vert part that is damaged is the fender. On it, they can take a hardtop one , cut it, and put your bracket on it and call it done.

Re: What to do after a wreck?

sounds like a 3/4 nose hit 3800-4500 so that estimate is within reason. if you let the shop use used parts or aftermarket parts you can bring the cost down. but the labor rate/price of materials/time to repair will remain the same.another issue i see is if the ins co totals the car( depending on the ins co the damage is more than 75 % of the value of the car) and you buy it back the car will be sold back to you as a salvaged vehicle. now the car is worth less if you sell it at a later date. now the last thing, unless you have ins with "agreed to value" there is probably going to be a difference of opinion on what your car is worth. and yes you can fight it.

Re: What to do after a wreck?

Thanks all for the replies. You gave me great insight on to what was going on. Never the less the vehicle now has a restored salvaged title on it. I still love it just as much though. Hopefully the thread will help someone else be more prepared for the unfortunate circumstances than can occur. I received my $2870 check and went on my way. So hopefully I'll have an SS hood on order soon and will begin the slow process of sourcing out a good 91-92 passenger side fender. Will

Re: What to do after a wreck?

$35 is an awesome price, but was it a reproduction or original? I've been told to stay away from the aftermarket. They take too much work to fit right and the sheet metal is thinner than original fenders. I haven't seen anything less than $100
