center rear spoiler repair

Does anyone know how to repair a center rear spoiler with brake light? I have epoxied the plastic pedastals that have the studs in them twice now and it still has not worked. ANY IDEAS?
I don't want to buy a new one if it is the same POS design or are new ones a different design? Thanks in advance.

Re: center rear spoiler repair

i had to do the same repair and so far its holding. im in the process of having the vert repainred so im going to reenforce the studs with fiberglass. im also going to use double sided 3m tape to attach the spoiler to the trunk lid. unless someone else found a solution thats all im aware of. still cheaper than a new one.

Re: center rear spoiler repair

as you've discovered the problem is the column or pedistal that is made of plastic. They crack and the captured threaded stud comes free or they pop free of the spoiler with age and vibration.

I replaced them. I made hat-shaped brackets with a large hole in the center. The center portionof the bracket had to be at a different angle to match the angle than that of the underside of teh spoiler in order to match the angle of the bolt and washer I ues to attach to it from below. I drilled several holes in the base pas of the brackets to allow the epoxy a place to grab hold when I epoxied the bracket it to the underside of the spoiler. I put a j-clip on the bracket, then used a bolt and large washer to secure to the j-clip from below using the same holes that the nut is used to attach to the threaded stud from the factory. The reason why I used a j-clip is that it has some room to move and align to the bolt in case I don't get the bracket exactly aligned on the underside of the spoiler. This repair lasted over a decade. Within the past year I had to re-epoxy the brackets to the spoiler. Mine is a 90 which has the side clips that float in a bracket that is riveted to the trunk lid. The spoiler is screwed to that clip. If yours doesn't have those side clips I'd suggest adding them too.

Re: center rear spoiler repair

I am selling a center spoiler from my 87 that I got rid of it is missing one stud but I was thinking why not drill into the broken stud and use a tap and use a metal stud and then epoxy after it is installed. pm me if interested in the spoiler here is the link to it it is in the classifieds already. Hope i can help.

Could you send some pictures of what you did or what you used? Sounds like that is the way to go.

Re: center rear spoiler repair

I know this is an old post, I have researched the Internet and haven't found an answer but I wanted to get an opinion or at least a good direction to head in for my spoiler problem.

I have a 1990 Iroc Convertible and have an issue with rear spoiler light. I bought the car as a project and the spoiler is there but is missing the "clips" that hold the third brake light into place. The clips I'm referring to are somehow attached to the spoiler. The car is at the paint shop so I don't have a picture right now of the spoiler. Is there a place where i can buy these clips? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Re: center rear spoiler repair

I used the epoxy that comes in the two tubes you squeeze out and mix and mine has held great. You have to prep it right or it will not hold.

Re: center rear spoiler repair

Ive done a few with 2 part epoxy also. I get some nice stainless bolt and epoxy those to the spoiler. Never had a problem after that.

Re: center rear spoiler repair

I learned to get a 1 inch piece of plastic water pipe and use the old broken stud and pedastal and cut the water pipe to seat against the trunk when shut. It strengthens the entire thing and there is a lot more area for the epoxy to grab a hold of. I have pulled on mine with over half my strength and I can't break it loose.

Re: center rear spoiler repair

Thats what the 1 inch water pipe is for. It surrounds the factory post with the captured metal stud and just adds a lot more area for the epoxy to adhere to. I cut my water pipe to seat against the trunk to take some of the pressure and I am very happy with mine. It has held for over two years and I can pull on it with at least half my strength and not budge it.

I made a couple of sheet metal angle pieces about 1.5 inches wide and 4 inches long. I bent them at the 3 inch mark and on the one inch side I drilled a 1/4 hole and put a threaded clip to it...the other side I used some thin velcro and attached it to the botton inside part of the spoiler. the other side of the velcro I stuck to the 3 in side of the angle... I then reattached the spoiler light, (after installing a LED conversion kit), and was good to go...Hope this makes sense and helps...

Re: center rear spoiler repair

I bought another spoiler to fix my painted one. On another note for future reference, my spoiler was modified by a shop in order to have no more problems with the studs. They attached small metal plates with rivets, rivets were covered with bondo on the top side then welded studs in place. Not a clean job but it was done for free.
