1984 Trans AM, L69 High Output, 5 speed transmission, 3.73 open rear. completly stock came with a single electric fan behind the radiator, my car has been overheating quite a bit. . then the fan broke replaced with 160 thermostat and new fan still over heated, had radiatior cleaned and pressure tested still overheated. replaced 195 thermostat and replaced both ecm sending units, one in the head other on gooseneck also changed fan switch..car runs better at 195 then is ever will at 160.. I spoke with a mechanic at the local gm dealer he said if none of that will fix the problem mount a secondary fan on the front of the radiatior to pust air through..
umm quick question about your overheating L69 does it still have the air dam under the front of the car because mine had the exact same problems yours did and I put another one on mine because mine was broken and it now runs fine

if your worried the switch is bad just take the wire and connect it to the frame....the switch works off a ground so if you hook the wire to the frame your bypassing the switch..the fan should come right on unless you have other problems..
Could be the factory relay has gone bad. Back by the firewall on the drivers side.

I've got an 85 LG69, but for some wierd reason, the fan is belt-driven! It's definately not factory, because it's bright-blue! I think the guy i bought it from installed it.
have had cooling problems with the car since i got it...
so far i have replaced the radiator, then it cracked on the side plastic part...now needs to be replaced again, done a head gasket on it, and tried three different thermostats (stock 195 or what ever, 160, and 180 currently in it)
had an IROC-Z with factory dual electric fans, and never had a problem with temp. EVER not even in traffic on a 100degree day.
Yeah when I got my car in the summer it loooved to overheat. We replaced the radiator/thermostat etc. this summer and it still did it once i think... gotta get that temp gauge fixed so i can stop it before it happens =/
They ALL overheat. You gotta get an aluminum radiator and I haighly recommend a two-fan set-up.

put a 350 in it, and I just started driving it a 3 days ago. I'm having stupid over heating problems.
new 180 high flow thermostat, 3 core radiator (some corrosion, hopefully thats the problem), and a new waterpump. painless electric fan kit, 200* on 185* off
The most confusing part though, It only overheats when driving faster than 10 mph. At idle It will run right at 190ish. Once I start driving It'll get up to 240 and still climb but i just shut it off once it hits 240ish.
Someone mentioned an airdam thing in front. Is this a little spoiler/wing thing that scoops air up to the radiator? And how much difference would it make if i didn't have all the thin black plastic covering stuff under the bumper. I don't have the air dam or the plastic cover things on. Could this be it?
I'm starting to wonder if it has a blown head gasket. The radiator doesn't loose ANY antifreeze though.
the airdam under the car is a must have item. if missing it must be replaced. mine broke off once while being dragged over a speed bump . the car ran hot as if i covered the radiator.
if the intake had been replaced or any new gasket been installed on the intake . "this happened to me once." if the gasket wasn't installed correctly the water port passage could be blocked by the gasket. also i would try to bypass the heater core as some times they may leak and cause a car to over heat. i hope you get it fixed.
87 GTA 350 5spd
1 electric car has a 454 throttle body makes the 350 run a hell of alot better and a tripple core aluminum radiator
it still is hard to keep cool
Is it the relay that only has 3 wires coming out of it? I asked for the relay replacement and it only has 3 wires available in the slots. All other relays have 3 in, 3 out.
The part that Advanced Auto Parts gave me had 5 in-line blade receivers with the fith one blanked.
I assumed that it was the one on the right of the radiator by the battery, but it had all five blades in it. Fan still did not turn on.
Sooo, as I was reading this thread, Barry85Iroc mentioned the firewall on the drivers side. I looked and sure enough there was the relay (Part #14078902).
As soon as I plugged the new relay in, the fan started.
Whew!, now on to the next problem. Thanks for all of the insight.
