I just bought this 86 Trans Am with swapped 5.7 V8 (atleast I think, need to check). The guy said the fan is wired directly, so that the fan always goes on when the radiator needs cool air. Problem is, I think the fan is on all the time. I turned on the car but didn't start the engine and the fan turned on too ( uh oh).

I have been trying very hard to read all this forums cooling and carb FaQs, and keep hearing that the engine fan only needs to be on when cruising and when the temp is at 220. I also realise that if the engine runs to cool, I'll damage something and also get poor efficientcy (most engines run better hotter even my other car's 3800 V6).

What shall I do gentleman? Iwould like to apalogize for posting something that may have been answer numerous time already. I don't know if I'm doing that or not. I'm a lil sleepy now (its 2:30am where I live). G'nite...

as long as you have a stock temp thermostat you don't have to worry about running too cool. the thermostat is what is supposed to regulate the engine temp. not the fans (that is if everything is working correctly) the thermostat will be closed at temps below about 190 therefore no coolant is being circulated and your engine temp is where it needs to be. so as far as running too cool goes, you shouldn't have a problem. but when you turned the key on (but engine off) did you make sure the a\c wasn't turned on? even if u just have the button on or the defrost on, the cooling fan will come on. there is a wiring diagram in one of the stickys that gives a very good example of how the fans should be wired. you might want to take a look and compare.

I have my fan on at all times too. It makes me feel a little safer when my engine runs cooler. I haven't seen it get above 200 once.
