This is my first post and I tried reading through as many posts before writing this but I still didn't feel like my question was answered.
I have just bought a 1988 Camaro Sport Coupe and it is having some issues. It seems to heat up in city traffic, which isn't a big suprise to me. I want to say it is the waterpump, but I'm not sure. I would like to fix this problem ASAP because I do need to get through some city traffic to get to most places.
Is there any tricks or pocedures I can take to narrow down my search for the problem?
Thanks for any help and sorry if this is a repeat question.

Re: 1988 Camaro Sport Coupe Heating Issues In City
How hot is it getting? The fan doesn't normally come on until the temp gets over 230 degrees (unless the a/c is on). Your gauge will go almost 3/4 of the way before the fan turns on, and then you should see the temp come back down. Let it idle in your driveway with the hood up, if the gauge gets up to 3/4 and the fan doesn't come on, you have a problem with the fan. If it was the water pump it would run hot at all times, not just in the city. It might not hurt to run some Prestone Super Clean through it too, just in case there is some rust build up.
Re: 1988 Camaro Sport Coupe Heating Issues In City
If it concerns you and you know a little about cars and wiring you could wire a toggle switch so you can turn the fan on whenever you want. Just a suggestion, but I also agree with was already said, the fans come on way to late, in my IROC it didnt come on till mid-high 230's. James

The car is 20 yrs old. I would do 3 things new rad $140 at napa, new cap, therm, I was having the same problem and replaced these items and it runs great.Total cost was 200.
Re: 1988 Camaro Sport Coupe Heating Issues In City
Yesterday I was driving the car and it overheated all the way. The Coolant was bubling for a bit. Once I hit the highway and turned the heat on it went down in a minute.
It probably is a mixture of the fan and the radiator. I'm going to get the system checked for leaks and flush it.
Do you think I should just replace the rad and thermostat just to be safe?
Re: 1988 Camaro Sport Coupe Heating Issues In City
1) Boiling over could be simply a weak radiator cap. Cheap to replace.
2) Was the fan running when it boiled over? If it was, see 1) above before moving on.
3) Fan running, new rad cap=still boiling over. Check for free airflow through the radiator. Pull the top mount off and check between the rad and condensor for trash. Spray both out with a high pressure hose. Air MUST get thru the rad to cool the fluid.
4) Only replace the water pump if it's leaking fluid under the pulley or making a bad bearing noise as it turns. Your t-stat is likewise probably fine. They are not the normal cause of overheating.
5) If your fan isn't running post back and we can start fixing that.
