First off, it's a basically stock 92 Camaro RS 3.1 single fan setup.
I've been trying for a while to find out how to install a switch to manually turn my cooling fan on/off. I've had the car for over 2 years now and the fan has never worked right. It sometimes turned the fan on when it should, but it almost never turns it on at all. From my searching of the forums, I think I just have to install a switch to ground the fan relay. Is this correct? If so, where is this relay located, and which wires are which? Also, will just a plain toggle switch work, or will I need something a bit more heavy duty?
I know people say that this isn't the right way to fix an overheating problem, but i really need a quick easy fix. Due to having an overheating problem for the past two years, I always watch the temp gauge. So it's not like I'm going to forget to turn it on when I should. Besides, it barely turns on by itself anyway.
Thanks in advance for any help you guys might have for me.
We used to have a sticky that was great but the OP has since stopped hosting the PDF files, so now you have to search again even though this has been answered. The file is in the original thread but on a later post.
Check out Willie's Total Fan Control Sticky in this Forum Section.
I checked out that sticky and located the PDF files. It basically says that if I want to turn the fans on manually, I need to add a switch to ground the fan relay. It doesn't explain how to do that though. I know this is a really simple thing to do, I just don't know where the fan relay is, and which wire on the relay is the ground.
Ok, found out the relay is on the driver side firewall. Pretty obvious... As for the switch, I just need to bypass the ECM completely and have a toggle switch run the fan. So, the wire I'm going to be dealing with is the smaller ground wire coming out of the relay, correct?
I'm not sure which wire is which, but I do know that my Hayne's manual has a wiring schematic for the cooling system. I don't remember if it labels the wire colors or not... Hopefully it does so I can be done with this already.
Autozone had the wiring diagrams. the Dark green/White wire is the one that goes to the ECM. So, as long as everything else is ok, all I need to do is hook up a switched wire from the relay to a good ground and it should work.
Hmm, sorry for this thread becoming a waste of space on the Cooling board. I think I solved the problem myself lol...
Oh, one last question. In case this doesn't work, I'll probably rewire the whole fan circuit. Easy enough, but what size fuse should I use for the fan power wire?
I think I got all the info I need now. Now to go see if it actually works the way I'm hoping. Also, I cropped and edited a pic for anyone else who wants to do the same thing. If not, I'm sure someone will find this in a search someday...
