I want to replace my cooling fan switch on my '89 IROC with one that comes on sooner than stock. I found one at JET Performance Products that is $60 just for the sensor that goes into the head. Anyone know of another place to get one for a more reasonable price?

You can try JEGS or Summit and get a Hypertech switch.

I just checked it out as I'd like to replace mine to. One come on at 200 and goes off at 185. The other goes on at 176 and off at 166. I assume the 200/185 would be the way to go?

AC Delco D1855B (or equivalent) fan switch. 210-215°F on/200°F off, so it'll work with the stock thermostat. $18

A duralast (autozone) equivilant is about $9.

I run the on at 200 off at 185 with a 185 thermostat. My car runs great.

Thanks for the replies. I'll check out these different options. The service manager at my local GM dealership told me that the stock switch doesn't turn fan on until over 230 degrees. 200 would be much better.

They say the engine should be at that temp for emissions and such. But I passed mine no problem and personally, I rather have my engine run cooler especially with this warm weather here in So.Cal.

Well I guess I am not putting a new fan switch on. I checked it out and the switch is only for dual fan set ups. Mine is a single fan. I guess it doesn't matter though, being a single fan it comes on with the a/c, if I am not using the a/c here in Houston, then my car isn't running hot anyways lol.

Tell me more. From what I can see for my car it is showing for dual fan cars only.

I can't speak for '86 and below but, for the TBI cars, the fan switch was the only source of fan control (and same for the lg4 after the clutch fan was tossed).
The v6, the fan switch was a redundant control for the fan. Meaning, if the ECM didn't turn on the fan, the fan switch would eventually.

IIRC, the iron dukes (4cyl), though fuel injected, still had a clutch driven fan.

That leaves crossfire and L69 motors which, I am not sure what kind of fan they had without doing some searching.

I have an '87 Helms manual. The S, F, H and 8 vin code all use a fan switch in one way or another.

Admittedly, there may be a single fan setup that is ECM only controlled but, I don't see it anywhere. Not to say I haven't overlooked it as well.

Yup, 1987 and on all engines got an electric fan. Mine is the single type. The TPI cars got the dual set up.

Well mine is an '86 TPI car and it has a single electric fan. The switch I saw said it's for dual fan set ups.
