I can't speak for '86 and below but, for the TBI cars, the fan switch was the only source of fan control (and same for the lg4 after the clutch fan was tossed).
The v6, the fan switch was a redundant control for the fan. Meaning, if the ECM didn't turn on the fan, the fan switch would eventually.
IIRC, the iron dukes (4cyl), though fuel injected, still had a clutch driven fan.
That leaves crossfire and L69 motors which, I am not sure what kind of fan they had without doing some searching.
I have an '87 Helms manual. The S, F, H and 8 vin code all use a fan switch in one way or another.
Admittedly, there may be a single fan setup that is ECM only controlled but, I don't see it anywhere. Not to say I haven't overlooked it as well.
Regardless, the fan switch was not exclusive to dual fans.
