Well it depends on what you want?....A stock GM fan switch turns on at 220* and turns off at 200* I believe! Last year I revamped my entire cooling system. I used a hypertech fan switch that turns on at 177* and turns off at 166*. Now she runs cooler and faster, L98's love to run cooler. Cooler temps = HP.....I used (Hypertech part#4026), there's also part #4028 which turns on in the 190s and off in the 180s can't remember exact munbers....hope that helps...
Sry for the stupid question but is this the primary fan or the aux fan between #6 and #8? My aux fan doesn't seem to ever go on. I'm wondering if i'm missing something. when your looking at the motor which side is the secondary fan on, left? what temps does the aux fan switch on at? i looked up these questions in ALLDATA, but as usual it didn't really have what i'm looking for. thanks for any pointers. Oh and i have a '88 IROC LB9 btw. Sry if i'm stealing a thread but this will really help me out and will be my only question.
The aux fan I believe is on the driver side. The fan switch should control the primary fan only - the aux fan only comes on when the A/C is turned on.
YES the aux fan is on the drivers side, the FAN COOLING SWITCH Is located Just under cyd 6 & 8. The connector is Oval in shape, my stoke connenctor was gray in colour. This temp switch ONLY controls your primary fan(passenger side). I hooked up a manual switch to the aux fan(driver side), so that on Really Hot days I can have Both fan running without a/c on. NOTE: turning a/c on will make your engine work just a little more and a bit hotter......
The fan switch controls the secondary (Aux) fan. 238°F turn on

The fan switch controls the secondary (Aux) fan. 238°F turn on
So, on a car with the single fan ... if the ECM controls the primary fan (ie the single fan since there is only one), why is there a fan switch at all?
So, on a car with the single fan ... if the ECM controls the primary fan (ie the single fan since there is only one), why is there a fan switch at all?
It's relevant to year (ECM used).
The v6, the single fan is ECM controlled with the fan switch as a redundant control.
The v8 TBI, the fan switch is the only control of the fan (aside from A/C in all cases and that isn't a given either)
This post isn't about single fans though. It is about the dual fan setup for the 1992 TPI (according to the data under the OP's avatar) in which case, the information you and the other agreeing poster stated about what controls the fans, is incorrect.
For that matter, I'm even adding irrelevant information to the post as it has nothing to do with the original question.
I got ya deadbird - I was just wondering. I had always read on here that the aux fan was only dependant on the A/C - so I was passing along the same info I'd read here for years.
Ok i dunno if this is the right place for me to post my question but since it involves dual fans i'm gonna go for it. Ok so my driver's sides fan kicks on at 238. Recently i found the aux fan sw unplugged so i plugged it back in. So basically that fan was getting turned on for something else at that temp. No the A/c wasn't on. My primary/passenager side fan doesn't come on at all. The first problem that coming into my mind is how come the ECM isn't grounding the primary fan at 220? Secondly the driver's side fan is controlled by that aux temp sw at 238 so that circuit is working. From what i''m making out on this wiring diagram whenever the aux fan gets grounded from the sw the primary is also supplied ground turning it on. Can somebody please explain to me what the hell is going on cause this is really got me confused!
jbates346, I have no idea if this will help u! When I replaced my stock temp cooling fan switch(on pass.head between cyl 6 and 8) it ONLY controled the prim/pass fan, NOT the aux fan (driver side). I thought/was told, the aux fan ONLY runs when A/C is on. Read post # 4 and 10. It might help, who knows!...
Not 100% sure but when rewiring my own fans, seemed to me that each fan has there own ground. If your stock sw was unplugged, maybe your sw is broken!!!!!
Good Luck....
I read those thats why i'm confused. First of all, i keep hearing different things about what fan is what! I just got off the phone with the dealer and their telling me the primary fan is the driver's side. If thats true how come its coming on right at 238......the same exact temp as the aux sw. Doesn't make sense.
WHAT IF WERE ALL RIGHT!!!!! Ever though firebirds and camaros are both f-bodys, share the same engines, etc.... The engine set up is opposite from eachother. My firebird has the alt. on the pass side, camaros I've seen have it on the drivers side. Firebird has a/c on driver side, the camaro has it on the pass...... Can the dual fan system be opposite aswell????? I have no clue!!!
The battery locations are relevant to the belt setup (serpentine or v belt). serpentine belts had the alt and a/c opposite of the v-belt setups.
. I H8 WWD That's correct granted, the switch has the correct thread (diameter) for the head that's on your engine.
jbates346, the first thing is to make sure both fans work. Switching the A/C on should make both fans run (assuming your A/C works)
Start from there and it can be worked out eventiually with your input of what does and doesn't work.

On an '87 (TPI), the primary fan was ECM controlled and would also turn on with the A/C IF the A/C was working.
The aux (secondary) fan ONLY turned on with the fan switch.
This was changed in '88 or '89, I forget without looking. so the aux fan ran with A/C as well.
As far as which fan is witch, I can't remember what it was on my 'bird. It's easy enough to figure out on one's on car though. Key on, unplug the fan switch wire and ground it. The fan the runs is the secondary fan.
For those cars with dual cooling fans, the PRIMARY cooling fan is on the driver's side (power lead wire is Black w/ Red stripe) and the SECONDARY cooling fan is on the passenger's side (power lead wire is Black w/ Pink or Purple stripe).
Of the three relays mounted on the relay rail on the driver's side firewall, the PRIMARY fan relay is on the far left (driver's side) of the rail and has a Green ground wire w/ a White stripe. The SECONDARY fan relay is on the far right end of the rail (passenger's side) and has a solid Gray ground wire. The fuel pump relay is in the middle.
Check your factory service manual.

Unless you have the MAF system, then the 3 relays up on the driver's side firewall are for the 1)fuel pump relay(by booster), 2)MAF power relay(middle), 3)MAF burnoff relay(by fender)!
So would it be better for both fans to come on at once or one then the other? I'm switching to dual fans and looking at fan wiring setups.
Well, the setup I use turns the primary fan on at one temp and the secondary fan on at another temp -AND- also allows for both fans to be turned-on manually, allowing for simultanious operation in the event you get stuck in a situation that requires greater cooling performance (like in stop-and-go traffic).
Here's a couple of links to descriptions of my setup:

Yes this is the setup that i have. The primary fan relay is on the passenager side near the battery. The secondary fan relay is next to the radiator on the passenager side.

Great links KRUSS, thanks for the help. Last time i tried something like that it didn't work. So now i just have the fans consantly grounded which of course means whenever the car is on the FANS are on. It warms up a lil longer but it doesn't over heat. Its a fair trade for me!

You could also simply install a toggle switch in the ground circuit to turn the fans on and off at will. This would at-least allow you to switch between the factory setup and the 'always-on' setup depending on the driving circumstances. I originally thought about doing this to my car (separately with each cooling fan) before I came acorss the automatic system created by 'WILLE'.
