cooling trouble

Got an 89 firebird formula a couple weeks ago...305 tbi with a six year old jasper in it...I thought it seemed to run a little hot so I put a new thermostat in it..elect fan is coming on and off intermittently looks like around 220 and off about 190 or so based on the 20 year old gauge and brings the temp down some but the first time I took it out on open road where I could open the engine up some the temp needle started to climb considerably...when i stopped (eng still running) the fan cranks and the temp comes back down????

I can see there is good circulation from the water pump...

cap looks new and pull the lever you can hear press release...

strange...this car deserves to be opened up on the freeway....

any help would be appreciated...

Re: cooling trouble

go look up under the front of the car and see if the air dam is still there.

Re: cooling trouble

I've heard the air dam can make a pretty big difference.

What do you mean you could see that the water pump was circulating water? I want to check on my water pump but I'm not sure how. Thanks and good luck.

Re: cooling trouble

the front airdam i am reffering to mounts under the car on the bottom of the radiator mounting bracket. it creates a low pressure area so air will go in the radiator.

remove the radiator cap and see if coolant is flowing with the car running. if it is hot wait till it is warming up with the cap off.
