can somebody confirm that a car with a single electric fan is supposed to run at two speeds, one with the AC off, and a faster speed when it's on?

my Trans am is overheating with the AC on, and I checked this morning, and there is no increase in the wind velocity coming from the fan when the AC kicks on?

To my knowledge, no domestic cars incorporated a 2-speed single fan until Ford did it with the Tuarus cars...and Motorcraft were the fans. Yours wouldn't be 2-speed and I'm not aware of any aftermarket company that even offers dual speed fans either. I've always been critical of the 3rd gens lack of a quality fan setup-the fans themselves aren't so much of an issue IMO as the complete lack of a quality sealed shroud design. For this reason, I always suggest going with something newer like the LT1/LS1 or even the RamCharger Chrysler dual fans/dual speed assemblies are a step up-those are wired in series at the motor windings so no series relay wiring required like GM's dual fans circa,1993-up.

If you want some options, PM me for info....I've been building a lot of fan kits for guys in Texas it seems lately....I go overkill with them here in the Midwest because of the humidity but you guys have some intense dry heat that's for sure!

The single electric fans operate at one speed. I have one in my car. They come on when the fan switch tells it to, or when you turn the AC on. Same speed both times.

Most likely you need a new motor and need to clean out the area between the radiator and condenser. I would also suggest doing a full radiator flush with new fluid, running a colder thermostat, say 180*, and get a fan switch that turns on around 200-215* as opposed to the stock 235*.

My car overheats in town with the AC on, it's a slow creep, but it's a creep none-the-less. My solution is to upgrade to dual TPI fans and while I'm at it, I'm waiting for 1Le here to finish my new fan harness.

This will give me a variable dual fan set up where the fans, both of them, come on at a low temp and then speed up as the temp creeps up. Or, come on at full blast when the AC turns on.

I'm thinking about just going to the LS fans, even if I have to have a auto electric shop for the relays for me. It's so much better a design. the stock single fans (and even the IROC double fans) have so little shrouding on them, they look like they don't do anything
